This year is the first year i planted for real. I planted very late and am not sure that we will get any edible fruits. But I am proud that I

-dug the soil up myself
-pre planted the tomatoes
-planted them outdoors
-planted carrots
-regularly weed and water

I want to continue gardening this winter, indoors. I would like to grow herbs and use them to learn to cook!

They're Sprouting!  — 1 month ago

My terrarium is full of little green pixies dancing in the moss!

It's hot...TOO hot.  — 2 months ago

Nothing is going to grow outside right now, so I planted some wildflowers in a terrarium. There’s already a dormant orchid and a tiny little pitcher plant in there, so the wildflowers, when they bloom, will be a nice addition. The box is set up in my bathroom so there’s plenty of humidity for growing things.

I will do some planting today. Flowers. Probably in pots. I wish I had more light in my yard. I’d love to grow tomatoes. But I love my trees too.

I want to grow things  — 4 months ago

it can be plants, it can be vegetables. I need to commit to spending the time to weed, sow, water, . . . all that stuff. I like gardens. I appreciate them. I mean to have one. But I just seem to plant things and expect mother nature to take care of the rest. Sometimes it works. Half the time it doesn’t. So, part of doing something for myself is doing something for my plants.

I love the idea of having fresh fruits and vegetables—and I now have a back yard large enough to pull it off! I want to learn to garden this summer.

The farmers' market starts today!  — 5 months ago

I plan to go and look over the bedding plants that are available. We’ll start simple this year—tomatoes, and maybe bell peppers, and I definitely want an herb garden with parsley, cilantro, chives, rosemary, and thyme, and maybe some basil and oregano.

We’ve done our taxes, and we plan on investing a small portion of our refund into gardening supplies, plants, etc.

YAY!!!  — 7 months ago

The dearest was paying attention! Not only did he get me “The All New Square Foot Gardening” book for Christmas, he also made me a “gift certificate” by folding a piece of paper over a $100 bill and writing a list of all the stuff I’d need on the outside of it. It was very cute and thoughtful and I can’t wait to get started!

I checked the book out of the library. It looks terrific. I can hardly wait till it cools down a little and I can go tear up the yard!

While I was at the library, I also stopped by their book sale and bought a few books on gardening. I found some that pertain specifically to dry and desert areas . . . stuff on soil prep and low-water-use plants that won’t break the bank to try growing during this 12-year (so far) drought.
