I guess it was worth doing because I needed them for my work. lol But it would be really annoying if I had to write in them every day of my life! Yikes!
Long live the Phoenicians who invented the alphabet! :) 3 years ago
Having trouble retaining the hieroglyphics… because I don’t know if I’m pronouncing it correctly since it’s not a spoken language 3 years ago
This is just another random goal. I think it would be pretty cool to learn Hieroglyphics. 4 years ago
in fact, i`m impressed of the best civilization in the history of man-kind; The civilization of my ancestors , actually i`m very proud of being Egyptian “pharaoh” and want to learn something even if it is so simple, but to dignify my ancestors and to explore the ancient world and its secrets.
i hope i find someone here who can help me ! ,, thanks 4 years ago
if you love ancient egypt, i would strongly recommend that you learn egyptian hieroglyphs. it is almost crucial that you know at least simple signs so you can pronounce the names inside cartouches. if you work at it everyday, you’ll get it! 5 years ago
I’ve decided that I’ll wait til college. Highskool, my insecurities and Cheerleading is about all I can deal with right now. 6 years ago
What would I do with this information once I’ve learned Hieroglyphics??
Write in my Diary in Hieroglyphics. That would be so frigging cool! That way I would have to remember how to do this when I get older, so I can read over my diaries. 6 years ago
I have learned Egyptian hieroglyphics as part of my university course and although I found it very hard going, there is a certain thrill that you get from being able to read (even if only the most fragmentary of sentences) directly from the inscriptions in museums and Egypt itself! 6 years ago
reminds me of that other goal I use to have concerning tarot cards. i wanted to learn how to use them. Like that goal, this one is most likely to never happen. So, it just sits in my 43things taking up space. Ooh, I can get a book to learn how to do this.
Barnes and Nobles here I come! 7 years ago
I’ve been trying to do this on and off for 10 years. I have some excellent books (Gardiner’s Egyptian Grammar, Allen’s Middle Egyptian and Faulkner’s Concise Dictionary of Middle Egyptian). I can recognise a small set of words and can read simple names, but I need to spend more time with biliterals and triliterals. 7 years ago
I finally started on this goal. So far I have read a good introductory book on hieroglyphics which explained the history, the basic structure of the language, and the tools used. I learnt that there are about 800 symbols that make up the original language, and if you can master those, then you should be able to read the majority or inscriptions on pyramids etc over in Egypt. When the language evolved, about 5000-6000 symbols existed… but it might be a little too ambitious to learn all of those. I think I’ll stick to the original 800 and see how I go with those first. 7 years ago
I recently read the Christian Jacq’s Little Illustrated Champollion (Le Petit Champollion illustré). It was really terrific book, but it was my first step to the world of hieroglyphs.
Now I’m planning to read more stuff on this. It’s just a pity, that there are no books on this theme in my language and no courses on language of Old Egyptians. I must get an English, Czech or at least German book on this subject. OK, hieroglyphics, here I come. 7 years ago
