I’ve had two “lessons” with family, and so far, it is the hardest thing I’ve ever tried to do.
Who knew I’d be such an excellent revver!

farossi is at work, as always!
How I did it: I learned on a brand new car, so I was nervous about doing damage to it. I practiced around and around in an open, deserted, flat parking lot, not using the gas at all first. The key is to find the point at which your clutch engages and the power is transferred to your wheels. Once I found this point, I was able to slowly let off the clutch without giving the car gas at first, so that I could creep along the parking lot. Eventualy I pract… Read how I did it…

How I did it: I acheived this goal through alot of practice and patience with myself. it really wasn't as hard as i thought it might be. as is expected, i stalled ALOT and there was alot of jerky, squealing of tires involved, but i don't think i annoyed the neighbors too much :) it helps at first if you let the clutch out and press the accelerator very slowly until you get a feel for how the balalnce of the two works. it is hardest to go from stat… Read how I did it…
onechimpanzee will be camping soon.
How I did it: Know these: You can't round most corners (from a dead stop) in 1st gear- you'll have to shift to 2nd to complete the turn. You can't back off the accelerator completely between shifts. It takes a slight bit of gas. You will make an ass of yourself in traffic- stalling @ red lights, pissing off a few people- laugh it away later. If the car starts lurching/bucking/jumping- hit the clutch, give it a wee bit of throttle, shift into the correc… Read how I did it…

My lovely hairdresser offered to teach me how to drive a manual. She obviously hasn’t seen me driving before. I really want to learn how to do this, because everyone keeps telling me that it’s just a good skill to have. My aunt tried to show me once, and I just couldn’t grasp it. I suppose it’ll just take practice.
I highly doubt my hairdresser will want to see me again after a half hour car trip with me =]
several years ago, i had a friend begin to teach me how to drive his little manual car. i was starting to get the hang it. but that was then, and this is now. and now i can’t drive a manual. need to relearn it all.
MlleM is doing homework... well actually I'm playing on here. oops.
Living in Europe, everyone drives a manual. Renting an automatic car here is a pain in the butt. I’d like to learn to drive a manual so I don’t have to deal with the inconvenience anymore.
Its just sad only being able to drive automatic, I feel slightly inadiquate :]
I’m doing it, I’m really doing it! I’m teaching myself and can now start, shift 1st, 2nd, 3rd and reverse! I just need more practice to get a bit smoother but yesssss! And can I add that I learned in the snow! I am awesome! HAHA Good luck to anyone else learning! Have faith in yourself and remember that anyone who has driven stick started out the same way!
I am 18 and I only drive manual. I learned on a manual and my parents and I have 3 cars and they are all stick. I have been driving manual since I started when I was 16 and I still stall the engine every once and a while, that is just a part on driving a stick car.
I have been driving a stick for a few years now and still kill it at red lights on occasion. Sticks have better gas mileage and some people just flat out prefer them to automatics.
Anyways, it took some time driving around a parking lot and jerking around and killing the thing it seems like hundreds of times, but eventually you just get better and better, like riding a bike.
It’s much easier for me now. Of course people still insist on stopping WAY too close to you when you’re at a stop light heading uphill, which means you have to gun it so you don’t roll back into them, but that’s just part of the fun of driving a stick.
...in a land far far away (North Dakota), I made my first try at driving truck (technically not a car) with a manual transmission. It had to be one of the most bizarre things I have ever done. It worked flawlessly the first time.
I guess I chalked that up to an overactive imagination when I was growing up, dreaming of racing cars. :-P
