"this was a milestone; a very precious milestone. "
How I did it: My hubby and i dated for 8.5 years before we got married. I was in college, and he had recently spent some time in Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina. We were broke and happy, and in love. I think i was cooking dinner, and asked if he wanted to get married on my day off, a tuesday. he said sure, but asked how we would do it. I said lets order some rings off of Overstock.com, and keep 65$ of our rent money, and go to the courthouse. So while i finished dinner, he looked for rings (17$ each), we had them shipped next day, i printed out the application, and we were ready. then, however, it started to snow, and snow some more, so monday night he gets a phone call asking if he wanted to plow snow in the morning. So we postpone our wedding until thursday morning. at this point only the lady at the post office knows. tuesday he called his mom and told her, and thursday we went and got married. We laughed the whole time, and suprised everyone. I had class that afternoon, so we had some taco bell and went home, and i went to class. total bill 65 for the lisence and the chaplin, 14 for taco bell = 79$. number of times we've fought over wedding bills = 0. my wedding jeans and wedding gap sweater are hanging happily in the closet.
Lessons & tips: you should never feel obligated to do anything, people expectations of you are their expectations, and this is YOUR day. a big fancy wedding does not mean you'll have a happy marriage. Do what you can handle and still be happy the entire time that way every memory will be a good one! we hear people all the time say they wished they would have just done it the way they wanted, or that they had just ran away alone, and we don't wish it had been any different at all.
