How to take an improv class
How I did it: I took improv class at The PIT in New York. I took "level 0" which was a 4 week course (one class a week). The instructor was awesome and I made tons of new friends. I'm even signing up for the next level (level 1) which is 8 weeks and ends in an actual show that you perform at the theater in front of a real audience! I highly reccommend this to ANYONE who wants to do something fun, exciting and different.
Lessons & tips:
- Go through a good theater.
- Check out real live improv shows before and during your class.
- Be brave, be uninhibited, just do it!!!
- Don't worry about being funny, being brave is enough.

I took improv classes. First, in Chicago, then in Los Angeles at The Second City. I loved it, and recommend that you do it, too! It took me three sessions to get through the IFA program, and then I auditioned for and got into the Conservatory. I highly recommend Second City, because of their curriculum and the great teachers, and great students that it attracts. They even have classes for people who aren’t actors (just ask them in the office to explain those classes to you, because I didn’t take those ones). Good luck, and have fun!

It helps you in life too. It’s the art of bullsitting quick on your feet, and making friends all the while. Or somethng. Good stuff. You can also appreciate comedians more. They make it look easy, but it’s definitely a skill that takes practice and training.
I had a great time at the Upright Citizens Brigade, and might even take 201 this Fall!
I would like to take improve classes to help me improve my acting abilities and to strengthen my chances of becoming a professional dramatist. Acting is something I love to do and I believe can be my calling if I were to ge these classes that will only help my already growing abilities.

ImprovAsylum has classes, and it’s near Gov’t Center.
I’m just saying…..!!
Next Steps:
Go to a show first. I can also invite a friend and get a 2-fer! (Go to one of my cultural events, invite a friend out…oooh, I’m so smaht!)
Stumbling Blocks:
-I’m nervous about it
-It “isn’t me”
-money, as usual, to some extent

Finished Foundation 2, and taking a few informal classes with ZoĆ« Galvez (excellent teacher). I’m scheduled to start Foundation 3 with Dave Denison tomorrow, and then Foundation 3 again next month with Gerri Lawlor. I’ve seen these folks perform on stage, and they’re fantastic!
I’m halfway through the Upright Citizens Brigade 101 Improv class and I love it!
And I’m inspired. I took an improv class a few years ago but dropped out because it took me too far out of my comfort zone. That very reason is why I want to take the class again and actually complete the course. Plus, maybe it will help me be a bit quicker and more witty in everyday situations. I could use that.

I took an improv class at BATS in Fort Mason Center. It was fantastic!
It took only six weeks, and went at quite a pace, though it was never rushed. I was surprised by how many exercises were simple attitude-teachers, like one that consists of nothing but walking up to someone else in the class and doing a circus bow while proudly saying “I failed!”
For me, the class was therapy. I’d been doing a lot of rushing lately. Improv moves very fast, but you never rush. Particularly valuable for me was being coached to slow down in a scene where I started by miming eating an orange. Just going very slowly made the motion look normal to the audience. n another scene, I and another student (male) were cast as “ex-lovers”. After a sentence or two, I mimed cooking some eggs—slowly, of course. I delivered a long rant in a gay voice about my “ex-lover”, referring to arranged marriage and tea kettles to illustrate trust and commitment. He replied with a great comeback that closed the scene.
