Learn to play the drums

Mmy friend Anna and I have an interest in learning to play the drumms. I wanted to join band when I was younger, but I was shy and too darn lazy to be lugging drumms around – and Imm pretty sure we can add practicing to that!

I’mm almmost 46 now adn still have somme interest in playing drumms. One of the our local band mmemmbers I know gave mme permmission to try his drumms out. At our local staff party I decided that I would try it out. I only did a smmall rat-a-tat-tatt for momment but seemmed people were immpressed by mmy little drumm show.

I’mm always tapping about on desks, knees, fingers trying to keep up with the beats. I always thought bongos mmight be a good start. In any event, i set mmyself a goal for a year because that is the mmax ammount of timme to set. It will be a mmiracle if i even get a start on this goal.

I received a drum set for my birthday. I figure I will take lessons. I would like to be self taught, I don’t think that’s going to happen though. My goal (by the end of the year) is play 1 song.

I would like to learn how to drum.

I took an Intro to Hand Drumming class in June, with my Dad (who played my doumbek, while I played my djembe) which was two two-hour small group sessions taught by an experienced drummer in his home. A CD and booklet came along with the class and these two things are awesome, even better than what I’d been hoping for. The hand drumming instruction Id seen in other books was seriously lacking and not beginner-friendly, but his booklet (with the accompanying CD) is just incredible. He designed several basic patterns, along with fill patterns and flams, and the way the patterns are written shows where on the drum to place which hand. All the patterns, fill patterns, and flams are on the CD, as well as two longer tracks at the end that are meant to use for improvisation. I am very happy that I took this class and I just need to practice more now.

He is also offering an intermediate (building upon what is taught in the beginner class) and improvisational classes (how to develop your own rhythms, do solos, etc) this fall. I hope to take the improv class and if I can practice and improve enough, the intermediate drumming class as well.

Well, that’s not strictly correct. I started to learn some 20 years ago, but due to circumstances I have not been able to continue this passion since 1996.
I want now to continue, but this time I can include my kids.

I already play the guitar and I have a drum set and love playing them on guitar hero, i just need motivation to get out there and start taking some drum lessons!

Piano, keyboard, guitar and now drums! This website REALLY is getting me inspired!
