A few years ago I really wanted to travel and do something different, but I didn’t have anyone to go with, and not much money. However, I did it anyway. By nature I’m not a real out-going person. But in 2004, at 55 years old, I sold or gave away most of my stuff, bought a large backpack and a one-way ticket to Guatemala City. I had arrangements to start at a Spanish school in Northern Guatemala. After a few weeks there all the other students at the small school had left, and my real trip began. Over the next almost 3 years I traveled/lived through some of southern Mexico, every country in Central America and Equador staying in hotels, hostels, home-stays and apartments. I am so proud of myself for doing this. Just before my first Christmas away, as I was writing my Christmas postcards, I described my journey as “Somewhere along the time I quit having a trip and started having a really different life.” I got back to the states in Jan 2007.
