I have been an ESL volunteer for the past year. Its very rewarding and I will continue to do this at least once a week.
How to teach ESL
How I did it: I'm still doing this and volunteer once a week. We took the summer off b/c my student went to Taiwan. We will pick it up next month. I enjoy meeting new people and learning about other cultures. My student and I practice conversation.
I had always wanted to do this and what really got me going was the movie " God grew tired of us".
Lessons & tips: None. Just do it!

I signed up for a 20 hour long weekend course to obtain my first TEFL certificate.
Putting this goal on hold, at least for now. It doesn’t hold the interest for me that it once did.
I’m already a tutor… and I would like to keep teaching; It’s amazing how good this labor is. You’ll get to know lots of people and also meet good friends…
Zen Oven is thinking she'd better get crackin' and do some stuff.
I just started teaching an ESL class at a local literacy center. I’d recommend that anyone do this—once you get over the initial nervousness of speaking in front of a group, it is easy. Just keep them talking to each other and you will help them immensely!
Today, I graduate from Simpson University. My college carreer here is now over. Today I have to start thinking about my future in a whole new way. I have a dream and desire to Teach English overseas. In order to do that I have to get a Master’s degree. That will only take two more years and then I can travel the globe teaching English. How exciting. I’m thinking I’ll go back to China. They need English teachers and there seems to be so many great opportunities.
Sorry 43 thingers if you thought that i was really in the same boat as all you people who want to really teach esl. My roommate and i were newbies at 43T and she was interested in ESL, but i’m not her, so yeah, um, anyway….(trail off)
But GOOD LUCK everyone. It seems like it would be a really great experience. Just not for me right now.
Teaching English as a Second (or Other) Language has probably been the most rewarding job I’ve ever had. I’ve taught both adults and children, one on one, and in large classes, and have never felt more appreciated or felt more like I was making a difference than when I was teaching people English.
Unfortunately, since moving several years ago and making a career change, I have not done any teaching at all. However, this is something I plan to change in 2007. Teaching a whole class is probably too big of a committment, but I should be able to handle teaching an individual once a week.

Still chugging along. I wonder how I will do with students of other levels and from other native tongues/cultures.

I am currently teaching a Brazilian lady and it’s very rewarding but I will soon need to branch out.
