I worked at a summer camp for a couple of summers as a lifeguard and swimming teacher. It was fun even though the weather was always cold and the pool was a peculiar shade of green (fill and draw pool + chlorine + lake water = Eeeeuuuuu). It felt good to be in shape and help kids feel more confident about being in the water.
How to be a lifeguard
How I did it: I started out by finding a lifeguarding class offered in my area. I looked for a class provided by the red cross. This class happened to certify me for CPR and first Aid too, which is always good. I called several area pools to get applications, and then sent them in (promptly). I heard back from several, got interviews, and was hired.
Lessons & tips: Apply to as many pools as you can, that way you won't limit yourself or, as cliché as this sounds, put all your eggs in one basket.

Helping people feels good and you will have a chance to save lives if you work as a lifeguard. I worked at an indoor pool and avoided the sun exposure, but had no tan to show for it though.
I really want to work at the pool this summer. The job I have now isn’t bad…fast food just isn’t my cup of tea. I don’t like it. Fortunatly, there is a lifeguard certification course coming up. I’ve wanted to do this for a long time. My parents are just worried about me being at the pool all day, because I’ve had a couple of guys at work being weird…but anyway. they think it would be worse at the pool. I think I ALMOST have them convinced though….we’ll see!
I’ve wanted to be a lifeguard for a long time. I absolutely love summer and being outside, and swimming, so it sounds like a great job! Especially since I work at Arby’s, by no means a bad job, but this one sounds MUCH better! I’m going to go to the next training thing they have at the YMCA, so this summer I can lifeguard instead of sell sandwiches! It’d be so awesome if I never had to do fastfood again! Yay! i’m doing this as SOON AS I CAN!!!
It’s a nice job, although where I was lifeguarding, it didn’t pay much. Because I like to watch people, it gave me an excuse to “stare” at them without looking like I was a total creep. I’d have to say that working in an outdoor environment is much more fun (I worked at an outdoor pool last summer), and usually the people you work with are pretty cool.
