"it's all about habits, not much else really...."
How I did it: well, basically step 1 was to give up sugar and junk food
step 2 was to decide to have breakfast, lunch and dinner and snacks in between that consist of real food (since junk food and sweets are not an option, I had to really find ways to get real food in my stomach three- five times a day)
step 3 was to create habits - eat breakfast every morning, then lunch = cooked meals at the cafeteria, afternoon snack - full-grain sandwich, dinner, etc.
I had to get into the habit of buying fruits weekly, so that I can take 2-3 to office with me each day + I eat one apple first thing every morning; I also had to develop the habit to buy enough ingredients each week, so I can eat a healthy sandwich each morning and pack one for the afternoon; this is because if I don't have a breakfast at home and I have to buy a sandwich, it will be hard to find one with full-grain bread - it's usually white; also there won't be so many veggies, it will not be so fresh, etc...same for buying an afternoon snack - can't get much of nutrition at the office vending machine and that's the only thing I have time for. Hence packing my own food has been a blessing and it takes less than 3-4 minutes to put a sandwich together, if you keep pre-sliced ingredients ready in the fridge - then wrap in foil, and here's the afternoon snack ready - you save money too!!!. I have a dinner arrangement with my roommates, so dinner is covered too.
Lessons & tips: it's all about habits and planning;
don't wait until you are hungry - eat when you know you should be eating - that way you are in control, you can take 2 minutes to peel an apple and all; if you are starving you need to get your energy asap and it's easy to reach for a chocolate/snack bar or a slice of pizza and that's not you need!!!
