as part of my round the world trip, i’m stopping in tahiti and easter island on my way to south america from australia. easter island has always been somewhere i’ve wanted to be – from the sheer remoteness to the moai – i’m very excited. i have five days there this december.
I really want to travel much more than I already have. It’s been years since I’ve gone to another country. So far I have visited England, France, Italy, Spain, Mexico and Colombia. Taking a picture next to the Easter Island statues is a must for me.
i participated in an archaeological field school in rapa nui (easter island) run through the university of hawaii both last summer and this summer. it was amazing. it’s a little disappointing, though, that you can feel the tourism industry growing by the minute. still, it is an amazing island and i am simply thrilled that i have had the opportunity to study archaeology there.
For so long i’ve dreamed about going to Easter Island and seeing the Moai up close. I’ve literally dreamt about it too and been so disappointed when I woke up and realised I hadn’t actually been :o(
Would love to combine this with a trip to the Nazca Lines – not exactly ‘nearby’ but a damn sight closer to each other than they are to the UK!
It’s cool and interesting to see the statues, but I was bored stiff after 2 days and just wanted to get the hell off the island. I did have a couple of cool moments on it though, like when I got lost on my quad bike and ended up on the wrong side of a volcano, completely on my own.
.
Edit: It’s also full of old people who are living out their lifes dream, not really a backpacker place, and definitely overpriced as it’s an island and they can charge whatever they want. I was 50:50 over whether this wasn’t worth it or not. Something you have to see, but may not enjoy I think.
i want to go so i can just stand there and look shocked; so surreal, so errie!
