Talk about horrible experiences! I don’t know what’s worse, the horrible taste that makes you want to gag or the sick feeling you have the next day! Certainly not as fun as it sounds. I felt like I had the flu!

Oh god, it really is foul! I prepared the drink previously mentioned, with about 6-7 teaspoons of ground nutmeg. I drank about two thirds of it over some time but I’ve had to give up as I was very almost sick on the last mouthful. The time is 18:25. I’ll let you know how I get on!

6-7 hours later, my eyes were bloodshot and I was a bit ‘monged’. It’s an interesting experience, a bit like being drunk but different. It was easier to snap out of than being drunk but also very easy just to tune out. I had a long, hard sleep afterwards again but was fine once I got out of bed. The end.

    Attempt #2 21 months ago

I’m having another go. Though as I sit here mixing milk, nutmeg and sugar, I can’t help thinking I should get myself some real drugs as this is a little silly. Ah well, it’s an experience…

Here is some info about dosages from wikipedia:

“In low doses, nutmeg produces no noticeable physiological or neurological response. Large doses of 60 g (12 teaspoons) or more are dangerous, potentially inducing convulsions, palpitations, nausea, eventual dehydration, and generalized body pain In amounts of 10-40 g (4-8 teaspoons) it is a mild to medium hallucinogen, producing visual distortions and a mild euphoria. Nutmeg contains myristicin, a weak monoamine oxidase inhibitor.

A test was carried out on the substance that showed that, when ingested in large amounts, nutmeg takes on a similar chemical make-up to MDMA (ecstasy). However, use of nutmeg as a recreational drug is unpopular due to its unpleasant taste and its side effects, including dizziness, flushes, dry mouth, accelerated heartbeat, temporary constipation, difficulty in urination, nausea, and panic. A user will not experience a peak until approximately six hours after ingestion, and effects can linger for up to three days afterwards.

A risk in any large-quantity (over 25 g, ~5 teaspoons) ingestion of nutmeg is the onset of ‘nutmeg poisoning’, an acute psychiatric disorder marked by thought disorder, a sense of impending doom/death, and agitation. Some cases have resulted in hospitalization.

Fatal doses in children are significantly lower, with an 8-year-old boy who consumed just two nutmegs to fall into a coma, dying 20-hours later.

Nutmeg is an abortifacient, and as such any significant doses should be avoided by pregnant women.”

I downed about a dessert spoon of the stuff but then couldn’t later bring myself to have any more. I intended to have a few times that amount but as it was I think it did have some effects. After a few hours my eyes were really bloodshot and I think things were a bit weird. I went to bed early and slept for ages (about 15 hours!) – full of crazy dreams and half-dreams.

I want to try this again with more nutmeg – I just need to find a better way to ingest it. Maybe with ice cream.
