Marc Lehman is way too busy putting on a class this weekend.
I’ve been looking for random acts of art and beauty, and this one seems like a good match for me. I have always loved giving flowers to my wife, and arranging them, so this seems like a natural way to spread that love out a little farther into the world.

One day, I was walking home, and I passed by a florist’s shop. They had just thown out a huge pile of long stemmed red roses. They were too faded to sell, but still plenty nice by my standards.
I gathered them all up, and then, as I continued home, handed one a piece to other folks on the street. Since they were walking one way, and I the other, there was no need to have a long conversation or anything. It was just, “here, would you like a flower?” I enjoyed people’s reactions thoroughly. No one was freaked out or treated me like a nut. One young man was struck speechless, elated, upon receiving his red rose.
It felt like a miracle – someone’s garbage becoming other people’s joy.

i would love to be able to stand in the middle of a city centre and just hand out flowers to people who looked down or even better make somebody happy just with a flower :D

You know, I always liked the idea of giving random morose looking strangers flowers and saying something like “Cheer up! It’ll all turn out all right!” and then peddling away on my little bicycle, leaving them to contemplate the exact meaning of that event, and either leave them thinking “Oh. Whatever,” or COMPLETELY CHANGING THEIR LIVES.
However, it would work best if I were a sweet old lady, rather than a slightly questionable teenage chick. But I’m hoping the effect will be similar.
I wish that I could give them to people in airports, since I think that people in airports could particularly use flowers. But they’d probably think that I was a terrorist.
On second thought . . . I always wanted to be arrested for something really cool.

...last month, an elderly lady being wheeled somewhere, said “here give this to your friend” as she handed me a pink carnation. So I gave it to my Mom even tho’ she wasn’t aware. Long time ago a Floral delivery man got out of his Van, handed me a rose “just for being pretty” and left. A treat! It brightened my day and also my co-workers. So I started doing likewise. Get strange reactions at times. People thinking there’s some kind of ‘catch’. But usually the stranger is pleasantly surprised and sometimes we’ll talk about spreading love one person at a time.
