How I did it: When I first got my periods, I soon developed very bad cramps. After a year or so, they were also extremely heavy but unpredictable. My first year in college a couple of girls in my dorm mentioned that the pill could take care of this.


I went to the student health center, got a pelvic exam, and after explaining the problem to the doctor got a prescription for Yaz. I only stayed on it for a couple months as it made me moody and gain weight and break out. So I went back and the doctor switched me to Ortho Tricyclen Lo. That worked much better. My acne and weight gain problems disappeared, and my periods began to come like clockwork, exactly every 28 days, and were so much lighter. And a year later, when I became very involved with my boyfriend, already being on the pill made me more comfortable when we finally began going all the way (i.e. intercourse), although we also used condoms at first.

Lessons & tips:

I keep my pills near my toothbrush, in with my makeup, so I have reminders to take it every morning. It's important to take it regularly, so I recommend some sort of reminder system like that. I have tried to be especially careful about it now that I'm having sex. Also, remember that if the first type of pill doesn't work for you, try another one. Every woman is different--my roommate does great on Yaz even though I didn't. And I know a girlwho didn't do well on Tricyclen even though it work for me. So keep trying!

    I swallowed my fear and went to the family planning clinic today. the nurse in there was really friendly and explained everything very clearly to me. And they gave me 3 months supply! Along with free condoms x10 and the option of a chlamydia test. Which I didn’t need. But it wasn’t as bad as I thought, I’ll officially start it tomorrow, which is when I’ll cross this goal off.

    I got a doctor’s appointment on Friday. I made a pro and con list and it was in favour of the pill. I haven’t told my bf yet, but I’m sure he’ll be really happy ;-)
    And I hope it’ll help me with my skin.

    Never have I had more problems with any other medication… for me, this little thing is definitely not worth taking!
    First, it was making me depressed and giving me bad stomachaches, and then it made me bitch and cry about things that not even a pastor would care about. WHAT THE HELL IS THIS THING???
    The brand is Tricyclen, by the way. So, I suggest anyone who has a tendency to be depressed to stay the hell away from this thing!

    And, you know what? I’m not even joking! :/

    ...I finally got all my testing and bloodwork done. So, HOPEFULLY, I can actually get that friggin thing this Tuesday.
    Holy crap…I hate bloodwork! I actually really don’t, but how that doctor did it…my whole arm was blue and swollen afterwards, and it hurt like a #$(*x%x#^% !!!
    Yes, I’m dramatic. And, yes, I like to complain :P

    Well, I had the appointment, but they said they would want to test me on Friday, which is today. And, unfortunately, I just started my period today . So they obviously can’t do the tests :(
