Very easy, with modern tents 23 months ago

With modern tents, setting up a tent is very easy and takes less than a few minutes after you do it once.

Modern free-standing dome tents have their pole segments corded,so you only need to insert one end of a segment into another, then bend the long resulting segment and secure its ends in the tent’s floor material.

It takes me about 4 minutes to unhurriedly set up a Mountain Hardwear Haven 3 tent, and I only did that twice.

I am helplessly clumsy and didn’t think I’d be able to do this very easily. The first time I put up a tent was last summer when I went camping near Big Bear Lake. This was also incidentally the first time I had ever been camping which is kind of odd since I love nature and go hiking all the time. It turns out I liked camping and went later that summer to Mammoth Lakes and hope to go at least once this summer before it ends. Anyway, I’m glad I wasn’t alone when putting up the tent because it really does seem like a two person job (well, it was a 3 person tent we were putting up…) but in any event more simple than I thought it would be. Simple but still not very fun.

has been tentatively (ho ho) set for the bank holiday weekend, 14-15-16 July. I’m trying to convice him to pitch somewhere near an onsen, but, apparently, if it’s near an onsen it isn’t isolated enough for his liking, so we shall see. My first camping experience – how exciting. I almost got carried away and bought some dried apricot dust and some magic outdoor pasta shell bars from the outdoor adventure shop, until I realised that (a) they cost more than they camping stove on the next shelf along, and (b) who on earth wants to eat pasta shells in a bar?
I’ll take a couple of onigiri though, to throw at the bears.

I am going camping with Daichi. At last, a chance to learn how to erect one of those canvas contraptions!! Unfortunately this means confiding in him the embarrassing fact that I don’t already know how to do this…

tried again last night and I’m really really almost certain all the pieces aren’t there. Surely I would have been able to figure it out if they had been? I mean, I count myself as a fairly intelligent person. I got the highest score out of everyone on the psychology department’s “space awareness moving objects around to get the correct pattern” type survey, despite doing a degree that involves nothing of the sort.

[ah, those were the days, when you could make enough money for that week’s food shopping by sitting in a lab pressing buttons]

Surely this is the same sort of thing?

I think I’m going to have to bite the bullet and buy an new one (but they’re 3man for a decent one, I’m impoverished!!), if only for the instructions that come with it.

Sorry bank. I’ll pay you back, honest. Just might take me a few years.

how difficult can it be? Poles, some big sheets of plasticky stuff, more poles, a couple of pegs…

I found one in my cupboard that the last person left but I can’t work out how to put it up. It looks to me like half the pieces are missing but I want to make sure before I buy a new one. And to be honest, how on earth would I know?

So, learn how to put up a tent. Put one up. If that proves impossible due to insufficiant tent pieces, go and buy a new one, and put that up. Then, the mountains are mine!

    Don’t forget the bear bell.
