I have enjoyed his movies!
It has been interesting to see Jet Li, not only as a martial artist, but as an actor and Fearless and this film have recently shown more of his repertoire, I think. Something I really liked about this film was that it was never cheapened by having to explicitly have any relationship go on between “Johnny”/Liu Jian and Jessica. It was paced well and I thought that the potential for a relationship was definitely implied.
So far, this is the only martial arts film of his that I’ve seen where the West is the setting, so I have nothing similar to compare it to yet. However, I will be able to judge better once I’ve seen Romeo Must Die and The One for example.
This is one of my favourites so far, which doesn’t say a lot, as I’ve loved every Jet Li film I’ve seen to date! :) I like the way we see two sides to him – his character evolves from an egotistical fighter who is only interested in the fight for the status it earns him to a mellow, peaceful and reserved martial artist, who is respectful and has etched upon him the results of some harsh life lessons dealt. The consequences arising from his ego were not trivial and this is reflected in his drastically altered personality thereafter.
It’s a beautiful film with a lot of depth. It is also a sad film, but it doesn’t wallow in that – it brings a seed of hope that it will be different in future. Be prepared to shed a few tears! :)
Hero was the second Jet Li film I saw, which was about a year ago. This is a really beautiful film which has a lot of depth: cinematographically, it is exquisite and the character development is excellent.
I love the way the main part of the film is divided into three sections, each telling the story leading to Nameless’ meeting with the Emperor from a different perspective. Using different colours to differentiate each story from the other is very effective and the imagery is fantastic. The martial arts combined with the style of clothing they wear creates some wonderful scenes, for example, when they wear red, Nameless and Flying Snow defending the school from thousands of arrows look like dancing flames.
The choreography of the martial arts is gravity-defying in places, so it can border on the fantastical, but the scenes are breath-taking, so stretching the realism is of no importance to me.
Jet Li is a pleasure to watch, not just as a martial artist, but also in depicting characters which we can identify with and even aspire towards. If it is possible for me to choose which Jet Li film I like the best, I would say this is a serious contender.
This was the first film that I saw Jet Li in and I was very impressed! I love the Lethal Weapon films anyway, and obviously when you reach the third sequel, you hope that the quality of the series isn’t going to plummet. This sequel rounded off the Lethal Weapon films very well, I think, and reflected changing times as well as using fresh material.
I really love watching baddies, and I thought Jet Li was fantastic as a villain in Lethal Weapon 4, because he didn’t seem phased at all by anything. He had that quiet confidence you see in many martial artists, and it was amazing to see him in action against the characters we were used to seeing as no walkover, by any means. And with such ease!!
I must admit to finding it surprising in some ways and not in others, when seeing on the special features, that he’s an incredibly nice guy! I find that when I really like a character, I like to know as little as possible about the actor in case they turn out to be an a**hole and put me off them. On the other hand there are some who I really admire and then find they’re really genuine people in real life. Obviously, you can only go by what they show you, and I don’t want to sound naive, but my impression of Jet Li from everything I’ve seen of him is highly favourable.
I’m looking forward to seeing more :)
