Spent about 6 hours and got both decks on the back of the house done! They look great!
How to stain the deck
How I did it: The deck was in pretty rough shape, so my wife and I sanded it a bunch, then wasted a ton of time using behr stain stripper to try and remove all the old stain. It didn't work very well scraping the old stain off so I broke down and bought a pressure washer. That worked okay but cost me $100. We finally put Behr premium transparent deck stain on the deck, which was almost opaque. We went through 3 gallons on a 12 X 12 deck. The label said each can was enought for 300-350 square feet, so aparently 12 x 12 = 900. Who knew. Once we were all done, the transparent stain look ugly and brown just like the old stain. Huge waste of time and money.
Lessons & tips: Never by Behr premium transparent deck stain.

where I either stain the deck or will have to start replacing wood. I power washed the deck a couple of weeks ago but I still haven’t got the stain on. Not good, especially since it keeps raining!
First we had to get the nails down and put down screws, then we sanded the whole sob, then after 4 trips to Ace to find the perfect stain the job finally was a piece of cake.
Stripping the deck was the most time consuming and sweat inducing, but still pulled it off in a couple of hours. Staining it took less than 2 – and went on easily and now the water puddles as it should!
Easier than I thought.
Oiling the deck is something I will be happy to do every 6 months of so…
An industrial floor sander and an edging sander. Took me all afternoon. Armed with my copy of the Collins Australia Do It Yourself Manual. The diagrams in there make it look rather easy. Getting the first layer off was bloody difficult. So tomorrow I have to vacuum the deck to get rid of the last of the dust and go over it with a little turps.
I hear that tung oil is an environmentally sound thing to use. The varnish the past owners used was a disaster although I bet it looked good initially.
I just finished staining my deck and porch this weekend. Feels GREAT to have it done (and I got a good tan, too).
The balcony outside the bedrooms could do with a clean and a restain. Haven’t got the cash at the moment and its something that will get done one board at a time sigh but I would like it done before the end of the year.
that is a 2 level large deck. It needs some stain lovin. And I need to call all my friends.
