Elected officials last Friday voted for an amendment to the Freedom of Information Act that actually exempts MPs from being subject to the act. For those unaware, the Freedom of Information Act allows citizens to request information from public authorities. This can be withheld in certain situations, such as national security.
This amendment is completely ridiculous. It is a massive backwards step in attempting to build a transparent and accountable government, and I have told my MP so. Rather worryingly, he didn’t even attend the vote for this, nor has he attended any vote regarding transparent government.
Anyway, if you’re in the UK, please write to your MP about this. You can find information on your MP and their voting record from They Work For You.
