The United States is an obligation  — 6 months ago

I declare that I am from now on working for the United Nations, whether recognized by the leaders of the entity with such a name or not. I am working on my own accord for the United Nations. We have no choice. We know our brutality, it has taken many, many traumas, many deadly, violent, suicidal encounters, but all the nations of this planet have now met and we cannot allow blood to be shed any more. We have to recognize our brotherhood right now and stop everything we are doing. The whole world should be in a state of emergency. We still have wars, famine, cruelty among us; our planet is dying, we need to communicate and change our ways immediately. Our industrial revolution has taken over and gotten out of our hands; we must take charge of our world and think of the generations ahead.

The United Nations is an obligation of all people today. We must stand united, heal our mother earth, heal our wounded, our hungry, our children and our old. It is criminal to sell powdered milk to starving African mothers, enslaving them to the lie of consumption, the mistrust in nature, the lack of faith and independence. Feed the Earth, it will feed the mothers who will nurse their infants. The Earth nurses her but we are treating our mother like a crazy old hag we’ve come to detest, ungrateful for our precious lives. Let us no longer, ever, deprecate life.

Here we are, let this be our purpose: the brotherhood, sisterhood of all beings to be manifest, here and now.

I live in New York and I’ve been applying for about 7 years. I want to work for UNICEF with children’s rights. I’ve spoken to several people who work at the UN/UNICEF and their advice to getting a job at the UN includes:

-know someone (higher up) there. Your experience/knowledge makes no difference as long as you know the right people.

-apply at a foreign post (other than NY). Supposedly it’s less hard.

-get an administrative job and work your way up. I’ve been told it takes about 5 years of doing filing in G-level for you to move up to a P-level.

A step in the right direction  — 1 year ago

I’ve applied for my first job within the UN! I came across a vacancy that I had no second thoughts about applying to: Associate Graphic Presentation Officer for the UNEP in Nairobi, Kenya. I would love to get the job, but having just graduated (BA Honours) I wonder if that will be good enough for the UN. Fingers crossed. If I don’t hear back from the UNEP, I now know what to do: work for a few more years, then get a Masters degree.

Here’s how i found the vacancy: jobs.un.org
Another good one (unofficial) is unjoblist.org, which can send you email updates when new vacancies are posted..

good luck to the rest of you!

Any progress?  — 1 year ago

I seriously want to work for the UN. I actually looked at the US states deparment web page. And there are many jpb posts and they all have rather interesting requirements. Even if you have grad degrees, they don’t seem to be enough. Ph.d in economics seems to be one of the exception.

I already have a Pharm.D (Doctor of Pharmacy), which will be good for nothing for the UN types of work. However, I want to get another degree. I am still debating whethere to do a MBA/J.D/Ph.D. I will do this regardless of where I work. I just want to make sure that the next degree will some how help me to qualify for a job with the UN.

Anyway, have any of you made any progress on your dream?

And the UN is definetly doing it.

Once read an interview with the graphic designers working for the UN  — 3 years ago

..was fascinated by how they had to and were able to design for people of a variety of backgrounds and cultures – as varied as humanity is. Since I’m a graphic design student, if I could do that and get those skills… man… :)

Getting there?  — 3 years ago

I’ve been inspired. I’d love to work with the UN someday, in whatever capacity – though preferably through the media or youth work.

Most UN jobs require French knowledge, so I’d probably need to take French lessons first. :P

Reminder to self: Write to National Youth Representive in Malaysia and ask how to be a part of it…

Ask for advice: Get help from people who've accomplished this goal
