It seems that the current working system of the stock exchange is that it doesn’t. Multi billionaires being turned overnight into mere billionaires – the poor lambs. It just goes to show how unreal money has become. Bring back the barter system, thats what I say!

..feeling proud & powerful. My suggestion to buy C&C stock now looks pretty dumb. They laid off more people at their two plants today. The general economy is looking poor too so its probably a bad time to be investing in anything. But hey, at least we are in the game and overall we have done fairly well due to our oil stocks. 4 years ago

..have had a share account for about two years now but it is always my brother who does everything. He makes all the suggestions, buys the shares, runs the account…all that. But last week for the first time i was able to make a coherent contribution. I suggested C&C shares as the price had fallen so low. Kevin (my brother) suggested another oil share he had been watching so we split the deck and bought some of both. of course the next day saw something like 50 squillion euro wiped off the share index but i feel proud and strangely powerful. 4 years ago

This goal has had very little attention paid to it….alright, none. But in my early enthusiasm i looked up C&C Group who make cider among other things. I thought they looked like a good bet coming into the summer but i noticed in the paper yesterday that due to our appalling weather and a subsequent collapse in cider sales they are laying off 70 workers at their Clonmel plant.

Last night i checked out the C&C Group. They are a beverage company that make cider mostly but also whiskey, liqueurs and soft drinks. Cider being a summer drink and this being the summer i decided they could be a decent bet. I made a mental note to keep an eye on their share price and went to bed.
This morning i opened the business pages of the paper to be greeted with the headline C&C PRICE ROCKETS. Christ on a bike, give me a chance to get in the game lads! 4 years ago

Checked out Aminex yesterday. They drill for oil and gas in Texas and Louisianna, not to mention exploration activities in east Africa and North Korea. Last year they lost 2.8 million dollars which was an improvememt on the $5m loss the previous year. But as they are my first step into this crazy corporate world i feel an emotional attachment deveoping…i can tell i’m not going to be very good at this.
At 36c a share they are cheap and affordable and who knows, N Korea may become the new Saudi Arabia. Lord, I can already tell that moral scruples will be no good in this business. 4 years ago

When i was in school i used to sit next to Phil in history class. Phil was a bit of a lad, his Dad ran a pub in the town and he had all the people skills that go with that kind of upbringing. I didnt. On the other hand, I was good at school while Phil just sort of got by.
Phil was drinking and womanising while i was still putting pictures of footballers on my wall. While i was figuring out how to get Kerry Collins to kiss me (she never did), he was having relationship difficulties and worrying about making girls pregnant. In our teenage world he was way ahead. We weren’t particularly buddies; Phil moved in a different circle to me, but i remember spending a saturday morning trying to explain to him how vectors worked. He didnt get it.
Phil is now a very wealthy man. He runs his own company and employs 42 people. He has a lovely house in a swish part of town which houses his lovely family and outside of which he parks his lovely car.
After school we went our seperate ways and i hadnt seen him until we bumped into each other a couple of years ago. Since then we hook up every few months and have a few beers. While having afew beers in the Summit Bar on Sunday he got to telling me about how he had bought out another company in England. So we got to talking about money and the stock exchange.
I know nothing about finance, but 2 years ago my Dad, my brother and me started off a share account with a view to becoming financial wizards and making our fortunes. Of course i havent lifted a finger and left everything to my brother. Naturally my brother tired of being the only active participant and the whole scheme has fallen into disuse. But we still have the account and there are still some shares in it. More importantly we are still putting money into it every month.
It struck me that Phil would be the ideal guy for a god tip so i could impress the guys with a hot share. Phils advice was this; do some research and read the business news.
Not what i was looking for at all. But here goes. Today i bought the paper and wrote out a list of the Dublin stock exchange companies. I am determined that this week i will find out what they all do. Its a start. 4 years ago
