I attended the Onion Lake Pow Wow in Saskatchewan, Canada with my mom. It was really cool to see all the native dancing and all the beautiful outfits. We felt a little out of place as we were practically the only white people there, but it was great to see such a fantastic native cultural event.
How to attend a pow wow
How I did it: i was volunteering on the Blackfeet Native American Reservation, in Montana.
During the week a neighbouring town was having a pow wow, and so our hosts drove us over, and we got to watch the amazing rituals, dancing and sample some of the food.
the only non Blackfeet there, we were so excited, privileged to of been able to attend. A sand storm also took place whilst we were there, adding to the spiritual atmosphere.

Proud is Thankful for her beautiful new daughter.
My sister whose husband (now her widower) is full-blood Cherokee, and I had a great time dancing. I was nervous because I’d never done it before and all the dancers in their regalia looked a little scary to me. But, she loaned me her prayer shawl and showed me how to wear it and how to step and it was very fun. Once I got in there up close to the dancers, many smiled and winked at me, and of course I saw they were just nice people. The drums and the fire and the colors and the beautiful smiling dancers of all ages… it totally filled up my senses and made me feel alive.
Well that was one of the last times I had with my sister before she got sick. Had I let my shyness keep me from making that memory with her I would still regret it bitterly. She left me that prayer shawl when she died. I haven’t been to a powwow since, but I think I should go to one this summer, and use the shawl. I can’t believe it’s been almost ten years since that night.
Go to one if you can and you enjoy cultural events. The dancing is so amazing, I could watch the dancing for hours.
The internet has calendars for the U.S. Check it out.

I went last weekend to Ardmore, OK and attended the high school’s fund raising pow-wow. It was well worth it.
Adrienne will be absent while taking strides for goal #1.
My freshman year of college, I went to the pow wow held at the University of Arizona. There were many Native American girls in my residence hall, and they encouraged everyone to attend. It was very neat!
I attended one in Arizona when I lived there briefly in the mid-90’s. I loved Native American food and ate it every chance I got!
