Beautiful, calming... and delicious :) 15 months ago

I decided to finally try and grow my first garden this year. It’s all potted plants, since I’m not sure about the soil quality around where I live… But they’re doing actually pretty good! Unfortunately the area that my backyard is facing, I only get partial sun… which is hard to grow a lot of specific types of herbs & veggies since a lot of them enjoy the sun. Right now I’m growing two baby tomato (Sweet 100’s) plants, chives, rosemary, oregano, chives, and chamomile. This was my first year attempting to grow anything, and they’re turning out fairly well. My tomato plants are growing a lot taller than they’re supposed to, I guess because they’re reaching for the sun more… but they’re still producing lots of tomatoes. They’re delicious eating them right off the stalk!! It feels amazing eating your own food you’ve grown yourself because you KNOW where its come from, and it just tastes that much better because of it (probably a psychological thing, but hey, it works).

Since I had no idea how to plant the chamomile or how it would grow exactly, I used bamboo reeds to tie the plants up tall… next year I think I will just try putting them in a big pot and seeing if they’re happier growing like that instead of having to grow straight up.

I’ve just harvested my rosemary, oregano, and some chamomile flowers last week & are drying right now on some racks. Hopefully they turn out well! :) Now I just need to buy jars to store them in >.<

Definitely making sure next year before planting that I have everything already for harvesting afterwards…

Hope to try growing peppermint next year as well. I have to find out if any of my herbs can be grown indoors for the winter…

Well, done in the sense that I moved houses, and no longer have a garden…
That sucks. But nothing to do about it.

Herbs 2 years ago

I randomly decided to grow window top herbs in little pots. I have basil, Italian parsley, and cilantro. Those are my most common herbs.

I’m remembering to water them as much as they need, and they’re sprouting up quite a bit. They’ve got a couple months until maturity, but I can’t wait.

My roommate also purchased a tomato plant for the patio that is growing fruit. If I wanted to, I could plant some actual vegetable crops into our little dirt space. Perhaps next spring.

Snails.. 2 years ago

Everything is growing quite well, but those damn snails ruin my pumpkin-leaves! I’ve already surrounded the small plans with broken shells (I want to garden ecologically, so I don’t want to kill the snails, I just want them to get away from my plants!) but somehow they crawl through the sharp shells and still manage to continue eating! Maybe I’ll comletely block the ‘entrance’ by sticking those wooden sticks (you use on the barbecue, don’t know what it’s called) around the plants so they really can’t get through.

sow the seeds... 2 years ago

So I’ve finally, finally cleaned up a part of the garden and prepared the soil for my vegetable garden! It was too small for a herb section, so I’ll do that somewhere else later on. Now I’ve planted seeds of amongst other things pumpkins and lettuce, and I’ve relocated my tomato-plants which I had started to grow indoors.
So now let’s hope it works out!

Started reading Square Foot Gardening. Actually, I’ve read it before so I started at the “nitty-gritty” part.

pots 2 years ago

Going well, although the actually space in the garden is still packed with bamboo (it’s so hard to dig it out!), I’ve got lots of little pots around the house with small plants and herbs! The tomato plants are growing like crazy, it’s so cool to see what nature does!

start 2 years ago

Although the garden is still a jungle, I’ve already pointed out an area for my vegetable and herb garden (all that stands between me and my vegetables is a huge chunk of ugly bamboo that needs to be destroyed!) and last weekend I bought some packets with seeds! I’ve got easy stuff, like lettuce, onions… And I’ve planted the tomato seeds in those little squared thingies, so they can become plants indoors and then they can transfer out to the garden when it’s finished. Same with some herbs, I’ve already got three herbs in pots!
It’s so cool, planting seeds and nurturing them and then watching it come out and grow! It’s so much better than planting plants bought in a gardening-store! It’s like your own creation, wonderful! And very calming too, after a hard day at work…

I was chuffed to find out that asparagus 2 years ago

can grow in the state of New York! Still, there will be no veggie and herb garden for me this summer as Mark doesn’t arrive until August and it’s something we want to design and work on together. Still, I have my flower gardens to keep me busy.

it would be a dream come true 2 years ago

I would so love to have my own garden to graze my greens fresh from the plant. Or even just a few editable potted plants around the house as that would be an improvement over the chilled greens that my human feeds me now.
