Okay, I guess I forgot to write an update. I went to a public bath-house about a week ago. I actually didn’t realize that what on the schedule for the day. I went out rafting with friends, and then we went to a bath-house to wash up after.
I am not really going to consider this completely done, because there is one specific bath house that I want to visit before I leave South Korea.
Okay, so I really did plan to go that Tuesday, but the friend that I was suppose to go with was unable to go. I want to go to a specific one, so hopefully we can reschedule for some time soon!!!
Well, this shall be interesting. I have wanted to this for a long while now (the locals rave about one particular bath house), so I told myself I would go to the bathhouse before I leave (I have 3 months till I leave the country). Anyways, I’m a little shy about doing this, because I’m not sure about exposing my body for all to see….
BUT, I’ve made a “date” to do it. A female friend and I are going on Tuesday… so, I have 3 days to gather my nerve.
In about a week, I will be traveling to Tunisia. I am sure I will be invited to the hammam again. This time, I think I will accept the invitation, despite my anxieties about it. I am just going to bite the bullet and do it. Who knows? I might really enjoy it and then I will be glad I did it. If not, I will never do it again. :o)
I was visiting friends in Morocco and was invited to go with them to the local “hammam”. I had never been to one there and so I didn’t quite know what to expect. Well, the first thing I noticed was that while Moroccan women may be quite modest in public, behind closed doors those clothes just FLY off! There were women of all ages, shapes and sizes. No one seemed to have any inhibitions at all about walking around NEKKED LIKE A JAY BIRD which helped me feel not so self-conscious. There were several different rooms—one hot, one warm, and one cold. First, you spent time washing yourself up. Then, some very large naked woman came over and scrubbed you raw with her Moroccan loofah equivalent. I noticed that the scrubber women kind of barked commands in Arabic to turn this way or that (French only works with the more educated Moroccans) and, not understanding what she said, the woman grabbed me and I went sliding across the floor to the great amusement of the other bathers. I had noticed women covered in what looked like eraser shavings. Little did I know that I would soon find out that it was skin and it flew off in clumps! YIKES! I came out of there RED LIKE A LOBSTER, but with skin softer than a baby’s bottom. Was it worth it? Oh yes. My skin glowed for days!
Actually, I remember now that I went to the public bath a few times in Japan. There the whole experience was verrrrrrrrrry different and much more refined. You spend a lot of time sitting on little stools scrubbing yourself and then, in many places, you get to go cover yourself with salt. Let’s hope you haven’t cut yourself SHAVING!!! OUUUUUUUUUUUUCH! You also get to sit in pools of scalding hot water with other bathing women who don’t really talk at all. It was a much more austere, zen-like experience, but also well worth it.
I give this goal a thumbs up no matter which way you slice it!
This summer my family and I are going to Tunisia to visit my husband’s family. Last time I was there, his mother asked me to go to the hammam with her. I didn’t go because I was really shy and scared to go to one. I don’t know what to expect, but I would like to experience a hammam at least once in my life. I am nervous about it, but I would still like to try it.
