back on the mat 7 months ago

Well, I’m back to going 2x a week! A good friend recently became a member at my same gym, so now I’ve got a buddy.

Wow, I used to go 2+ times a week. I stopped for a while because of an injury, and I needed to focus on re-building my strength. My flexibility has taken a huge hit, and now that I’m as better as I’m gonna get, I’ve gotta get back to the mat. I also have a year’s worth of insight from my physical therapist on how to move correctly, so that’s definitely going to help my practice.

I've been to two classes in the last month... 11 months ago

I’ll consider myself back into yoga when I’m going at least once a week.

Hot Yoga 12 months ago

I bonded with a new friend by going to a “Hot Yoga” studio this Sunday morning. Here is the website link to give you an idea of what I was in for:

http://www.oldschoolhotyoga.org/

The yoga studio is in this secluded little coffee shop town next to Arcata, with lots of Redwood trees, shaded dirt paths, ferns, moss, etc.

For an hour and a half I sweat away my toxins and it hurt! I have not done yoga since the age of 18, when I took a college class focusing on Hatha Yoga. I recommend taking a class rather then just showing up if you’re serious about yoga because if the instructor does not know that you don’t know key bends you can hurt yourself. Luckily this did not happen to me. But, as an example, my college instructor said that you should never do a back bend and a twist stretch/pose in the same session because you can pinch a spinal nerve (I don’t know if this is fact or just recommendation.) Plus you get more personal attention to posture in a regularly scheduled class, as opposed to just showing up with twenty strangers and looking in the mirror to see if your body is aligned correctly. But it was so fun. So, so fun. I forgot how clean and energetic it feels to move those muscles and concentrate on breathing. Next Sunday my buddy and I are going for it again. It’s about 101 degrees in the room; the perfect escape for the cold rainy season here.

Helpful Yoga Video Games 12 months ago

For the past week I have been doing my yoga for at least an hour before I go to bed (2-3AM).

I am an avid gamer so I bought ‘Let’s Yoga’ and ‘Quick Yoga Training’ for my DS. It’s very helpful if you don’t have time to go to a real class like I do. The games have good sequences of poses to target certain areas or goals and they have a function to help you work on your deep breathing.

I wouldn’t consider it a substitute for a real yoga class because you still need personal instruction on how to position your body properly. Rather, I see it as something complementary to add to your yoga studies. I’m just happy I’m more active and becoming wonderfully flexible again.

An injury prevented me from going to class... 12 months ago

for a few months but now I really have no excuse. And I have also noticed that I feel different – I don’t have the same flexibility and I’m more stiff overall. Getting back into yoga would be nothing but good for me.
