How to become a certified lifeguard
How I did it: Basically, in high school I needed to fulfill a Phy Ed credit, and I didn't want to waste an entire period of a semester taking a useless Phy Ed class. So I looked at my options and found that I could take a semester class of life guarding which would count as a Phy Ed credit. Basically this was a great opportunity for me because a) I didn't waste a period of an entire semester on a ridiculous high school Phy Ed class b) the final exam was the Red Cross exam c) it was really laid back because it was a two month course spread out to last five months d) I took the class with some good friends.
Lessons & tips: Don't be afraid of the deep water saves! They are actually the most fun!
Resources: The Red Cross.

I received my Bronze Cross a couple years ago, but not my NLS certificate, because I was too young at that time. Over the years, I’ve become out of shape, so I’m hoping to change that. I think becoming a certified lifeguard will be great for my resume and scholarship applications, but I’m mostly doing this for myself. I think I will be able to do this, but I’ll really have to put my mind to it. So far, I’m planning to do at least 30 min. of exercise everyday, cut down on junk food, and listen to my body so I won’t overeat.

because I’ll be done with this by tomorrow. I can’t wait to start working!

I had my first day of class yesterday, so this will be done by the end of the week!
I’ve did training with the Red Cross through school & it was worth it. I still do not have a job, however, I feel the knowledge gained is priceless because I know if I had to, I could save somebodies life.
LOL I was all excited to start my new job as a lifeguard and get a chance to oogle all the cute guys….well they were far and few between. Most of what I saw was old men. It was still fun and eventhough It’s been a few years since I’ve worked as a lifeguard I still out of habbit yell at kids and people to walk or slow down. They all look at me like I’m nuts but I’ve yelled it for years so I think it’s in my blood. Hey at least my kids know proper pool and water saftey. :}

ever notice that once your a lifeguard, everywhere you go, like at a pool on vacation, you’re just more alert to the ppl around you? i cant help it.
I’m a lifeguard and swim instructor, been one for three years. I think it is very rewarding. Each time I get to rescue someone (and in the summer, that is a person a day), I feel great for the rest of the day.
I first became certified when I was 16. It’s a rewarding job, and looks great on résumés! =)
