I’m notorious for putting everything on my desktop. I really clean it out every couple of months, but to keep it looking nice and empty I use a program called FENCES.
Its a freeware program and organizes all the things on your desktop into different groups. Best of all, if you double click on your desktop to HIDE ALL YOUR ITEMS so it looks like your desktop is minimalistic. Super easy! 22 months ago

How I did it: I bought an external hard drive. I saved all the important stuff to the hard drive. Things that were outdated or not useful anymore or dead I just deleted. Read how I did it… 2 years ago

I bought Leopard two weeks ago. It solves this problem by saving all downloads in special folder on the dock. Or: Safari does I still have to solve the problem with Firefox placing everything on the desktop. 4 years ago

I just wrote a tutorial for keeping your desktop clean on LifeClever ;-). The system uses just five folders to organize everything: Inbox, Actions, Incubate, Current Projects, and Archive.

i did this and it helped me be more efficient with my work. I now have the 6 programs i use the most and 3 folders that have all of my writing and pictures and files that I dont use so often. It’s made it alot easier to find things and be able to get more work done faster 5 years ago

And keep an “Every thing” and recycle bin only… As a tip, try sorting by file type. For example, all the setup and installation files go into one folder, all images into another, and have as many sub categories as you like. ;) 5 years ago

My desktop is almost icon free and looks very clean!
It’s so much easier to clean my virtual desktop than my real desktop. Too bad I can’t click “Empty Trash” to send the trash out to the backyard. Heh. 6 years ago

I have a folder on my desktop called junk and I put everything useless I downloaded or received in it under categories (Pics,Downloads,Text etc).A simple and clean wallpaper and well-chosen icons makes it even better. 6 years ago

i usually save everything to my desktop. when it gets too full i put it all into a folder called ‘stuff’ or ‘things’ or ‘everything’ or variations of those names.
so i just have lots of folders within folders full of random stuff. and it is fun to navigate through them to find my files.

So I can now at least see part of the background picture of the mountains around Lake Wanaka on my Powerbook desktop. Still have a bit more stubborn clutter to go though. Problem is, I’ll lose the files unless I sort out a decent folder structure before I move the files from the desktop. Su d d e n l y t h e r e g o e s m y e n t h u s i s m 6 years ago

A good idea is to move things into organized folders in “My Documents” instead of your desktop. You can keep all the vital, quick-access icons on your desktop under a file called, “System Tools” or something similar. Keep yourself controlled with a strict maximum of ten regularly used icons. If you do not find yourself clicking on an icon at least once a week, it does not deserve to be on your desktop. 6 years ago

Keeping one’s desktop clean is very worthwhile. I use the QuickLaunch bar (the group of icons next to the start button) for all program shortcuts, to keep them off of the desktop. I also regularly file everything on the desktop. I am not one of those persons who doesn’t keep anything on the desktop, though. The desktop metaphor, though flawed, works just fine for me, thanks. But I am only recently coming to terms with background images – I used to find them gauche. 6 years ago

I used to have this problem until I switched to Linux. Yes you can get a cluttered desktop with a Linux desktop – with GNOME or KDE, for example – but I couldn’t stand either of them (for other reasons) and chose the XFCE “desktop” instead. Except XFCE doesn’t really have a desktop per se, so I’m forced to save my stuff in an appropriate folder and remember where I put it. 6 years ago
