My friend Nathan is on his way down to Antarctica now for his second stay – this time for a whole year. It sounds like his kind of gig and he can have it. I’ll take a remote location “top side” thank you very much.
How to work in antarctica
How I did it: I accepted a job working in the housing department at McMurdo Station, Antarctica. I was in charge of assigning everyone who came through station a dorm-room, bed, and most problematic - a roommate. That was the easy part of my job. I then had to listen to them come and complain about their bed, their dorm, the bathroom facilities, and their roommate and beg for their own room (which no one ever got). Other than the work stuff, it was AMAZING!!! A beautiful landscape, and such interesting people work down there. The best part? Dressing up consisted of putting on your cleanest Carharts! And every party elicited a costume. You could dress up for anything.
Lessons & tips: Agree to do crappy work (clean toilets, count stuff, wash dishes, etc) and you'll have a life experience that will never be matched. BUT - you better be ready to work!!

Antarctica is not a place that lets itself be visited without work. It’s a great place to learn to work with a shovel!

need help getting to Antarctica. Would love to work down there, but don’t know where to begin. HELP!!
I have a few friends who just came back from a year in Antarcica and they had some really great stories. The community of people down there sound wild, fun, way out there.
It is one of the most beautiful and most tireing places in the world. You will work you but off… 80hrs a week, but every day is worth it. I already have a contract after I graduate from school to return to the ice. Its well worth the labor. Good luck everyone…
I cry when I think about Antarctica. It’s so beautiful. If I could see a Blue Whale from Antarctica, I’d never need to see another thing.
