“I’m not gonna live my life on one side of an ampersand”
From Ampersand by Amanda Palmer
The song itself is great, but I love this one line. I’m assuming it’s about not being defined by your relationship and living your life independently.
It perfectly depicts the kind of person I’m striving to be.
In the past, I’ve let my relationships become me and what I’m all about. I’ve lived my life to please the other person and that’s not right…
I am currently in a relationship with a man whom I love dearly, however the relationship itself is still young (we have known each other for years, but that’s another story for another time) and I’m trying to build myself as individual rather than as an extension of another person. It’s hard, especially as I’m going though such a change in my life at the moment and the temptation to just latch on to someone and become dependent on them is there… not consciously, it’s never conscious, but I can tell it’s there.
Okay, I realised this is now becoming more of a self-reflective essay rather than an admiration of the song, so back to the main point. Yay for Amanda Palmer! ♥ 2 years ago
