it seems like such a quaint vocation. playwriting.
who goes to the theater any more?
while i know it’s extremely hard to make money from writing plays, i’d like to have the kind of life that entirely supports my desire to write plays and have them produced. right now, i fund my own productions from money i make at my day job. this can be empowering at times, but i am feeling the physical and emotional burnout from wearing so many hats at once. i’d love to find some way that everything i do to make money is related to writing or being creative . . . and that the money job does not interfere with the “creative” life.
i also feel like i work hard to pay all the artists i work with something, it is rare i am paid for what i do. getting paid, even a stipend, sends a message that there is value to one’s work. it would be nice to have that more often.
lastly, i think i can do a better job at being more connected to my writing. i think i am often focused on externals (since i also produce myself) and i have often let a rejection or a bad review destroy all the good work i have done on a play.
