Ny avocado plant has about 10 leaves and it’s one foot high. I think that even if it dies eventually (I don’t know if they can survive indoors for any length of time, and I’m not in the right geographical area to plant it outside), I’ll consider this goal achieved.
hey i tried the toothpick suspension over water method but no luck then i just plonked a bunch of pits into soil then in AUGUST six advocado plants sprang to life!!! here’s a tip … it’s got something to do with the time of the year … i’m in northern hemisphere and they all just popped up in august (the pits have been siting in dirt for almost a year) good luck, mine are doing real well :o)

But the stem is so thin. I pinched off the two newest leaves after the first two, like the web site suggested, but I wonder if it is stunted. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

It took a while, but I have a root and stem growing from my first attempt pit. I think I’ll plant it in soil in about two weeks or less. I hope it survives the transition. I know this is probably not very exciting for most people, but I actually found quite a few people on plant type web sites that are writing in all kinds of advice about how to grow an avocado from a pit. Different strokes, right?

I now have a root about 1/4” long, and a stem just starting, and the pit has totally cracked in half. It says on the avocado web site I found that I need a 2 inch root and a 2 inch stem before I plant it in soil. Patience. I hope it doesn’t rot in the water. So exciting!!

My avocado pit has cracked all along the bottom and it looks like it might be doing something, like sending out a root? It’s been like this for a long time. I’ll be patient. sigh

Do you stick a few toothpicks in the avocado, and let part of it sit in a glass of water?
