Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

Money is good to have 5 years ago

i’ve made many many mix tapes in the past and more recently mix cds, a varied selection of roadtrip, romance and friendship lists but they’re never quite perfect – there is always one song that is just off and that you wish you didnt put on there … so im on the search for me to make the perfect mixed tap

REFERENCE: ‘Love is a Mixed Tape’ 6 years ago

so funny that everyone’s idea of the “perfect” mixtape is so different. 6 years ago

This here is the closest I’ve gotten. I like it. The person I gave it to, and a few of the people she’s shown it to, say they like it. And I believe them. I know it isn’t perfect, but it is the closest I’ve gotten so far. Also, this was not a mix tape, but a mix CD. I currently do not have the means of making a tape.

This goal reminds me of the book Hairstyles of the Damned by Joe Meno. It is a wonderful book, and I recommend it to everybody. It was recommended to me by the same person who received the mix listed above. 6 years ago

Jess. Dream.So far...

...I have about 12 songs. I’m only picking the best of the best for this one! I keep the playlist on my iPod and listen to it occasionally, scratching any songs that I think aren’t perfect. I realize that I’ll never have a “perfect” mixed tape, but I like the challenge and the experience of really thinking abouy my favorite songs.

Honestly, no one uses “mixed tapes” anymore, they’re too out of date. I barely use CDs!! But I’m going to make myself a mixed tape after I compile the list and keep it in my nightstand drawer. Just as a general “pick-me-up” kind of thing.

ChrisIn the process

I am in the process of making one of the best mix tapes inspired by life so far. It will include some of the normal things that need to be on mixed tapes and it just is going to be a tribute to music. No particular genre but just music. Remember potential mix tape makers…
“The making of a great compilation tape, like breaking up, is hard to do and takes ages longer than it might seem. You gotta kick off with a killer, to grab attention. Then you got to take it up a notch, but you don’t wanna blow your wad, so then you got to cool it off a notch. There are a lot of rules.” 8 years ago

Every tape I’d ever made, however awesome, always had the One Song on it that I ended up fast-forwarding through after the first couple listens.

Every tape until this one. Yummm.

The key, I think, was to relax a bit and think less. 8 years ago

ShampooSuicidenew plan

changed my mind, I want it to be THE perfect mix-tape for myself. No pretencious “theme” or anything. Just all the songs I find beautifull. I´m working on it. 8 years ago

okay so my friend told me this theory – you can’t ever make a perfect mixtape because better music always comes along. so to make a perfect mixtape, you’d have to do it and then die before you ever heard any other music.

and I think it makes sense but I’m not giving up yet 8 years ago

I think a perfect mix tape/playlist is completely subjective (as could be argued everything in life). For me, it was basically sitting down and going through all my songs on iTunes to figure out what combined would make a great “Soundtrack of my Life.” So, here it is, 27 songs total:

1) Take It All Away (Acoustic) 4:23 Ryan Cabrera
2) A Lack Of Color 3:38 Death Cab for Cutie
3) Hands Down 3:56 Dashboard Confessional
4) To Be Alone With You 2:45 Sufjan Stevens
5) Poison Oak 4:41 Bright Eyes
6) Kill The Messenger 3:24 Jack’s Mannequin
7) Goodbye Waves And Driveways 5:05 The Rocket Summer
8) I Am For You 3:29 Waking Ashland
9) I Just Don’t Think I’ll Ever Get Over You 5:20 Colin Hay
10) Burning in the Sun 4:01 Blue Merle
11) Such Great Heights 4:26 The Postal Service
12) Everything About You (Alternate Version) 3:50 Sanctus Real
13) What Sarah Said 6:20 Death Cab for Cutie
14) Circles 3:06 Soul Coughing
15) I’ll Back You Up 4:29 Dave Matthews Band
16) Green Eyes 3:45 Coldplay
17) Look After You 4:26 The Fray
18) Look Where We Are Now 3:43 Teddy Geiger
19) My Dream Girl Don’t Exist 4:24 Neutral Milk Hotel
20) Constantine 9:37 Something Corporate
21) The World At Large 4:32 Modest Mouse
22) Stop Crying Your Heart Out 5:03 Oasis
23) 3×5 4:50 John Mayer
24) Leslie Anne Levine 4:11 Decemberists, the
25) Passing Afternoon 4:00 Iron & Wine
26) Fake Plastic Trees [Acoustic Version] 4:45 Radiohead
27) Bless The Broken Road 3:47 Rascal Flatts 8 years ago

I make mixed tapes (Rather CD’s) all the time, but I’m never satisfied with them.. I’m getting better though! 8 years ago

Emilllii've done this...

I hesistate to say I’ve made the perfect mixed tape, because I will continue to make mixed tapes and I want to believe I haven’t reached the pinnacle of perfection.
The ones I’ve made have been damn! good. Melodic, pleasant, delightful and moving. 8 years ago

kingonlyChanging strategy

I’ve been listening to my music and realized I enjoy the alt. country americana songs the most. So, I’m leaving the anchor-song strategy and I’ll make a list of song that fit the alt-country-folk-american-rock profile. I guess it will be an all-male mix. I don’t want it to be too quiet, I want it to be uplifting… Ryan Adams must be in it. 9 years ago

kingonlyWhere do I start?

I havn’t prepared a mix tape since I was a kid and I’m sure it’s not going to be easy…
Well, first thing first. I need to think about the mix tape theme and give my mix tape a title. I think I need to choose one song that will be the anchor of the compilation and call my mix after the song’s title (that will make the task easier).
I’m going to go over my music collection and I’ll try to find the perfect song – it will be definitely need to be an inspiring song. Any ideas? 9 years ago
