i’ve made many many mix tapes in the past and more recently mix cds, a varied selection of roadtrip, romance and friendship lists but they’re never quite perfect – there is always one song that is just off and that you wish you didnt put on there … so im on the search for me to make the perfect mixed tap

REFERENCE: ‘Love is a Mixed Tape’

so funny that everyone’s idea of the “perfect” mixtape is so different.

Close. 21 months ago

1. Helplessly Hoping by Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young
2. Blowin’ In The Wind by Bob Dylan
3. Concerning Hobbits by Howard Shore (LOTR Soundtrack)
4. She’s Got A Way (Live) by Billy Joel
5. Scarborough Fair/Canticle by Simon & Garfunkel
6. Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door by Bob Dylan
7. Pisces Fish by George Harrison
8. Fly Like An Eagle by Steve Miller Band
9. Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy) by John Lennon
10. Dirt by Phish
11. The Dangling Conversation by Simon & Garfunkel
12. Dear Prudence by The Beatles
13. After the Goldrush by Neil Young
14. America by Simon & Garfunkel
15. The Fox In The Snow by Belle & Sebastian
16. Ashokan Farewell by Mark O’Connor

This here is the closest I’ve gotten. I like it. The person I gave it to, and a few of the people she’s shown it to, say they like it. And I believe them. I know it isn’t perfect, but it is the closest I’ve gotten so far. Also, this was not a mix tape, but a mix CD. I currently do not have the means of making a tape.

This goal reminds me of the book Hairstyles of the Damned by Joe Meno. It is a wonderful book, and I recommend it to everybody. It was recommended to me by the same person who received the mix listed above.

So far... 2 years ago

...I have about 12 songs. I’m only picking the best of the best for this one! I keep the playlist on my iPod and listen to it occasionally, scratching any songs that I think aren’t perfect. I realize that I’ll never have a “perfect” mixed tape, but I like the challenge and the experience of really thinking abouy my favorite songs.

Honestly, no one uses “mixed tapes” anymore, they’re too out of date. I barely use CDs!! But I’m going to make myself a mixed tape after I compile the list and keep it in my nightstand drawer. Just as a general “pick-me-up” kind of thing.

=)

In the process 2 years ago

I am in the process of making one of the best mix tapes inspired by life so far. It will include some of the normal things that need to be on mixed tapes and it just is going to be a tribute to music. No particular genre but just music. Remember potential mix tape makers…
“The making of a great compilation tape, like breaking up, is hard to do and takes ages longer than it might seem. You gotta kick off with a killer, to grab attention. Then you got to take it up a notch, but you don’t wanna blow your wad, so then you got to cool it off a notch. There are a lot of rules.”

Made one for my birthday 3 years ago

OK, so it wasn’t a mix tape because I don’t own a cassette player any more but ‘mix tape’ sounds so much better than ‘mix cd’ or ‘mix mp3 playlist’.
Anyway, here it is:

  3. Forever by The Berzerker
  4. Needled 24/7 by Children of Bodom
  5. Synthetic Generation by Deathstars

Every tape I’d ever made, however awesome, always had the One Song on it that I ended up fast-forwarding through after the first couple listens.

Every tape until this one. Yummm.

The key, I think, was to relax a bit and think less.
