I can do this 11 months ago

I once had a relaxer when I was about 10 and my hair broke so my dad cut most of it off and I cried :( I then had my hair in box braids with extensions and occasionally cornrows. Nobody taught me how to care for my hair so it was never in the best condition but it would grow while in braids but then break when I took them out because of how I combed it and the bad products I used. It’s pretty uneven now.
To cut a long story short, I’m 25 now and for the last year I haven’t had extensions in but my hair didn’t retain length because I combed it too often and used the wrong products.
After lots of research I feel confident that I now know how to take care of my hair and I hope it thrives so I can wear it out and big! I’ll try to remember to get photos up…

My hair’s in braids right now, which I like, but I want to be able to be comfortable with having my ‘fro out. I’m not going to relax my hair, since I love my natural hair, but I REALLY hope it grows more, it’s at a good length, but it could be better (I’m thinking about measuring it, but that might be a bit obsessinve (:), good luck others.

Growing an afro was just too much work for me... 17 months ago

I decided to lock my hair again instead. I’ve attached a photo of what it looks like now. Enjoy!

I haven't chemically straightened my hair since last November... 19 months ago

And I still have quite some time to go before I have a full on ‘fro. I am getting a little impatient, and having hair that is half straight and half curly is a lot to deal with. I am hoping it will be long enough by December 2008 for me to be comfortable cutting off all the straight bits. Until then it’s curling irons and cute hats. I hope it’s worth it.

Tonight I am in the progress of taking my braids out. I can’t stand the broken edges anymore (this is hurting my hair). I plan to wear in an afro puff. This goal is essentially done but my hair is not the length I want. I do have to get the right products, tools and process to care for my ‘new’ hair. Otherwise I know me—I would be tempted to go back to the perm because it is ‘easier’.

Last night I dreamt that I took my braids out, combed my hair and ran free with the biggest afro trailing behind me, blowing in the wind.

I have hard my hair in braids for awhile now. I plan to take them out, cut off the permed ends and re-braid. Time is the best thing for growing an afro.

    Do it! 2 years ago

Yeah, sometimes people are ignorant. But we’re “letting our hair down”, just as a person with straight hair would. I stopped relaxing my hair over 10 years ago and I would never put another chemical to my head. I’ve learned to love my hair although it can be challenging at times. Sometimes I chop it to shoulder length (like now), but I always let it grow back. I also braid it and put it into different ponytails. Very rarely I will flat iron it, but I quickly realize all the work that goes into keeping it straight is a pain. Many people actually wish they could grow an afro!
Let’s be proud of heritage and happy with our beautiful hair!
