But I live in a city with great public transportation so I can be without a car. I don’t really miss owning a car. It always seemed I had to put money into it somehow, either in payments or insurance, or making a repair. I miss the convenience of a car though, especially when there is bad weather or I need to get somewhere fast, but most of the time I am fine without one. The added bonus: exercise in walking, and hopefully soon in biking.
The car died one January and we were wondering what kind to get next when we realized that we had been talking about doing without one for a long time and this was the opportunity presenting itself. Since we live in the city with bus service everywhere, we thought we’d see how long we lasted. We bike to work or take the bus in the winter, walk to get groceries, got a trailer for the bikes. It’s great. When we need a car, we rent one for the weekend and go get “big groceries” like 24 rolls of t.p. and cases of cans and such. We only rent a car a few times a year and since it’s far cheaper than owning a car, we have saved quite a bit doing it this way. This summer, we even went bike camping for the first time, although carrying camp gear on a bike and then sleeping in a tiny tent loses its appeal after one passes one’s mid-forties. :)
