my philosophy on cd-buying can be summarized in one classic Brodie Bruce quote: “why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?”
before I was granted even the most intermittent of broadband internet access, I bought cds all the time. one of my all-time favourite bands is a sci-fi surf rock band from Atlanta, and at the height of my adoration for them (aka 1999-2001) I bought all their cds. all of them, which is no small feat, and most of their 7” vinyl exclusives; it took me months to chase everything down on eBay and at shows in frat houses in Philly, and fuck. these days, when I like a band, I can find a digital discography within 45 minutes and boom, there you go.
recently I have fallen head over heels for Calexico and I told myself, ‘you are going to buy their fucking cds OR ELSE’ (the ‘or else’ probably being, no sex [WITH MYSELF] until at least one cd was purchased). shit like this is always easiest when there are things like Best Buys in your neighbourhood (alas, not within 20 miles), or cheapest online, but I’ve always been more of an instant-gratification kind of girl. the last time I was in Barnes & Noble I scoured their cd section for something I could take home and love forever, that also wouldn’t break my budget. they had neither the Calexico full-length I want most (Feast of Wire) nor the EP (Even My Sure Things Fall Through), but I adore Iron & Wine fiercely so this was definitely an acceptable substitute.
320 kbps mp3s, here I come.
apropos of nothing (yet also a shout-out to all my Northern Loves): while double-checking that Brodie quote in IMDB I fell into the memorable quotes page for “Chasing Amy”, and fuck, I need to buy this movie on DVD, and soon. “I got a weird thing for girls who say, ‘Aboot.’” yesssssssss. how could I forget how much I loved that shit? absolute hilarity.
