I am doing an abseil 275ft down Grimsby Dock Tower for the Red cross! donate: www.justgiving.com/mariebullivent scary stuff!!
How I did it: We went to waitomo caves and abseiled 100m (330 ft) strait down with nothing within reach but our ropes, into a place called the lost world. We clipped onto a rope, went out on the platform, sat back on a bar suspended over nothing, clipped onto our rappeling gear, then just sat down off the bar into our harness. after that it is just pulling up on your rope to descend.
Lessons & tips: Go to a place where the people are well trained and the drop point is established. It's safe and comfortable that way.
Resources: Check out the waitomo caves lost world epic tour. The abseil is just the begining of a great 7 hour trip exploring the cave system and seeing the glow worms while swimming in the underground stream.

youster is very behind things on this site!!
Originally I planned to simply participate when a local charity held one of these. I am aware that Rowcroft do this regularly, but I have a new idea.
Although I think I will still participate in the abseil for Rowcroft (whenever this is) ... I am also going to set up my own.
I am a member of Children’s Hospice South West charity, and could possibly organise a small charitable event for them, or alternatively, I could arrange one for Abaana – a charity for the children of Africa.
I found this site:
www.charityabseils.co.uk which may be a great help for this sort of event.
I look forward to properly planning it after my exams! :)

Whether it is off a building or a cliff face . . . try both! Why not!? What a buzz! : )

Excellent fun

Yes, I did it!! It was brilliant and I would do it again no bother. The worst part was actually letting go of a railing at the top and trusting you weren’t going to fall backwards off the building but of course we were safely harnessed on and once you got going down the rope it felt really good. I want to do it again!
Really good fun! I’ve been a few times and would go again if not for a disability (don’t worry, it was not caused by the abseiling ;-))

I have never abseiled before and thing it would be awesome – and scary! I would love to do it off a really high bridge.
SO much fun!! And I’m a bit nervous of heights but I faced my fear, did it and had loads of fun!

Go to the top of Table Mountain and Abseil down with the Abseil Africa people. Even if you’ve never done anything like it before you can do this. The guys were pretty hot as well.
This is actually one of the more dangerous aspects of climbing and I’ve heard that more rock climbing deaths happen as a result of rappelling accidents than any other single source. I’m sure it’s different for mountaineering, but I’m just focusing on rock climbing. So if there is a safe way to walk down from a climb I’d rather do that than rappel.
Still, I do enjoy rappelling when I’m very confident with my set up and skills. My favorite rappel was done in Yosemite as part of a class. We were at Puppy Dome in Tuolumne Meadows and there is a 90 foot rappel that leaves you hanging 30 feet out from the rock for the last 70 feet of the rappel. It was pretty amazing being free hanging on the way down.
There’s another cool rappel on one of my favorite easy Yosemite climbs that leaves you out 10 feet from the rock at the bottom that’s fun to do.
