I’m trying through the internet, but I don’t know if I’m getting it. Anything I can do short of paying for lessons?

I inherited my father-in-law’s mandolin. It’s not fancy, but I’ve learned to tune it (got a little electronic tuner), and I’m practicing some simple chords and scales. I think I’ll take it to the music store for a little fix-up and to see if they can recommend a teacher. There’s quite a lot on the internet, but I’d like to make sure I start with good technique.
CharityAK is loving life!
This is supposed to be pretty easy to pick up if you can play the violin. So after the violin goal gets met, I’ll shoot for this one.
I ordered my first mandolin yesterday, a Johnson MA-120 with natural finish. All solid, which I am told is good. I’m excited to get it and start the learnin’!
Yuko feels lost
I really, really want to try this. It’s close to the violin so I think I’d be able to pick this up pretty quickly. The picking is something I’ll have to learn, but my brother’s promised he can help me out. I love the way playing music makes me feel. I want to branch out from the bowed instrument and get into an area that I’ve never touched before – learn a few chords, maybe, but mostly melody-based. Mandolin seems like a good instrument to try that.
First Step: Actually buy a mandolin.
the frets are close but you have more strings than a guitar, its definently fun and has a pretty sound. learn chords, practice scales and you will be on a good start
I can play a bunch of songs now and even played at my wedding this summer!
I’ve been really thinking about buying a mandolin and learning how to play it. Does anyone have suggestions as far as brands go? I really like the look of the f-style mandolins, but I don’t know where to begin. HELP!!!
Betani is getting reaquainted with this site.
I still can’t find an instructional video I like. I can’t afford classes, so I have to rely on what I can find in the book stores or the library.

These websites helped me a lot.
I guess having prior music knowledge about half steps, whole steps, intervals, arpeggios, and chords helped too so I would encourage any beginners to either get a mandolin teacher or take a beginning keyboard or guitar class, but these websites can probably teach you a lot like they taught me.

and go to http://ultimate-guitar.com to look up chords for songs you know because they’re good motivation.
