How I did it: It was because of my dad's work and I really missed my friends back home in the states. It was exceedingly hard at first, but it got better once I made some worthwhile pals. We moved to the Middle East from the states, which was even harder because nobody speaks any English and it's hard to communicate and watch all the News about things that are happening an hour away from your home. But we're getting through it, and it's definitely been… Read how I did it…

And then came back when I was almost 10 ='( i want to go back! and i will one day (cough gap year cough cough) Read how I did it…

Jahlizz is up too late.
How I did it: It was an impulse. The opportunity came for my husband to work in Dubai. Three months later, we left the U.S. We are still here. It's been nearly three months and overall, it has been an interesting experience. Dubai is a good first country- the culture shock is minimal. The creature comforts are all here. Lots of imported foods. I'm ready to go other places and be a little gnarlier. Read how I did it…
How I did it: So after 21 years of living, breathing and being torchered by my isolation in the USA. I decided to take some drastic measures and get out! I took almost all of my close and ran off in the middle of the night to live in Montreal. From there I went to France (Paris, Nantes, Vendee) and then back to Montreal. From here...who knows where I will go. My life is full of surprizes now and I wouldn't have it any other way! Read how I did it…

my name is paul Godwin Iyoho i live in Nigeria.
i will like to live in a foregn country and complete my studies.
i willappreciate all effort you will afford for me.
I am 90% sure I am going to Australia next month, so this might be delayed a bit but I don’t mind too much. I just want to go somewhere, anywhere.
I went to Cordon Bleu and worked in Paris for about 3 years. I loved it and if I could have found/been allowed to work, I might have lived there longer. I made some great friends and learned a lot about France as well as the U.S. I also learned a lot about myself. Everyone should try to live abroad if they can.
I’ve been really lucky that one of my parents has a job that took my family on different international job assignments. I got to grow up traveling, and I feel it’s really a life changing thing. I find that people who travel have a really broad comfort zone, and adapt really well to different situations. Growing up I got to live in places like Thailand, Indonesia, Ireland, South Korea, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, which really exposed me and my family to the way people live in different places. Now older and in college, I’m currently living in the U.S., and constantly dreaming about traveling more.
When I eventually start a career, I’m aiming for a job with traveling benefits so I can continue living abroad.
Tips: When choosing somewhere to live, set your sights on more stable countries that don’t have too many governmental problems, so you don’t have to be evacuated in case of any conflict (case in point: in the 90s my family was evacuated from Jakarta during riots that were targeting foreigners. Weighing the risks can save you a whole lot of trouble.
Before moving to a country, do some research. Find out about the language and any communication issues you may come across. Like, does a high percentage of the population speak your language? Or are you going to have to learn theirs to get around. Many countries’ school systems teach english, but some don’t. (My experience: while living in a smaller town in Korea, barely anyone spoke english, so I had to really learn Korean. In the beginning I was really lost in translation, but after teaching myself some useful phrases off the internet, it got better. In bigger cities though, many more people speak english.
If you want to do something different with your life while having a lot of fun, meeting new people, etc, definitely go for it and make the move. Trust me, you’ll have great memories, and you won’t regret it.
...and this is not going to happen in another two years, at least. And maybe not even after that; I’m tying myself pretty tightly to where I live now but all of my choices. Besides work, there are my relationships and my pets. I really want to both stay and go. But I’ll have time to think about this!
Viewers, in your own opinion, do you count living in a foreign country for only 2 weeks in a hotel on a study abroad trip?
I want to go to Brazil, but I would rather book a round trip ticket (or one-way) without the hassle of getting a visa before I depart. I need a city and a beach. Montevideo? I also want to get something out of it like learn a language. I guess I could always improve my Spanish.
Maybe I will do Europe and Latin America. I want to have an idea of where it is I want to live by mid-Summer and depart by fall. I’ve saved the money and I am making the time. Maybe I just need support or reassurance?
ohhboyd just created an account in 43things!
Switzerland: It’s the best country to live in. Plus, it’s neutral.
