I got my start when I was 16 my mom worked in sales at a local radio station and talked them into letting me try a late night weekend spot. I was hooked from day one! I then went on to work as the music director for a local college station and then moved on to a top 40 station working 12-6 at first and then moved on to mid days from 10-2. It was almost like being a rock star with all the groupies and crazy people hanging around. I wouldn’t trade this experience for the world. It just didn’t pay very much in my local market.
I had a two hour slot on Friday afternoons. OK, ok, it was a pirate station in a small Vermont town, and most of the listening audience consisted of other DJs, the terminally bored, and a few shut-ins, but for a lifelong record nerd, it was a golden opportunity. Highly recommended.
I guess I was the youngest DJ of my entire city. I did that when I was 12 until I was 15 in a local radio. I was doig the animaion and the technical side, had my key of the radio and was doing the morning show on saturday mornings alone.
To be honest I don’t think that a lot of people where listening this radio lol
I’m hoping to be one of the ten students they let work at the radio station. Hopefully I will be!
haha I’m guessing lame radio shows you made up with your sister don’t count, huh?
I’ve had some jobs I really hated, being a DJ was by far the best job I’ve ever had. I loved every minute I spent in the studio.
jkorab is planning world-domination.
I ran a show on a university radio station for 3 broadcasts (6 weeks each). It’s the most surreal experience, to have people listening to the show and talking to you about it later. Had an absolute blast doing it. If you don’t mind the idea of potentailly embarassing yourself in front of complete strangers then do it!
College Radio counts doesn’t it? Though I have to say, the creepy guys calling late at night, or the brilliant drunk dialing by people you used to go to school with who are hoping to hook up is distinctly NOT WORTH IT… though they can provide some comic relief later.
Happy Phantom is just relaxing
It was fun to have my own show. I got to play whatever music I wanted. Everyone danced to my party! Until that creepy guy kept calling and started saying he saw me at the grocery store. Yuck!
