Looking for routes into the NGo business

I wan’t to work abroad and join some kind of NGO agency to make a difference where possible.
To get towards the goal I’m planning to work in south america as a volunteer and attend uni at portsmouth (BA – international development with spanish).
Anyone have any advice for the goal?
