I love winter activities, and I think it would be so neat to make an igloo in my backyard… I can just picture a lovely snow day from school, hot chocolate, and igloo building. Soon enough. :)
How I did it: After two previous attempts, I finally finished an igloo in December of 2007. I didn't use bricks, though, just packed the snow into a circular wall and then built it up curving inward until it formed a dome. It's not that hard and it's definitely worth it.

there’s a few feet of snow out there right now, and it’s around feezing everyday (thanks new england!) but i still havent made my igloo. i want my friends to help me like we tried to do last year but they’re so lazy and all they wanna do is play xbox and drink. but i’m trying, a have a few more months left and i reeeeally wanna get this done this year. soon i promise myself
Has anyone else purchased an Eskimold? It’s a plastic bucket of sorts that helps you make snow blocks for igloos. Great little thing. Too bad the weather conditions keep changing, or perhaps I’d be done with my igloo! I got 3 rows done, then it started warming up again, so now it’s all melted. :( I hope it snows again before the end of winter!

It’s rainy and sloppy out, I don’t think we’ll be able to enjoy this view for long, but it was fun while it lasted. Then again, if it refreezes and snows more, we could make it into an underground snow cavern.

Yei-haw!
While the majority of the igloo building kudoes go to Markus (who stayed out an extra hour perfecting things: the top, the doorway & meltguard, a castle worthy wall) this was definitely a family effort. Isak (who stayed up well past his bedtime) really got into it, packing snow into the cracks, making “bricks” with his dumptruck, shoveling extra snow.
Long ago (when I was a kid), our family lived in Vermont for a year and we tried to build an igloo with some marvelous plastic boxes with handles designed to make snowy squares, but we only got so far, and never managed to close off the roof (though were still ferociously proud).
The one in our back yard now is fully closed (except for the entrance) and at least 6 feet tall. I LOVE it! I’d actually give sleeping in it a go if it was just the two of us (wouldn’t that be interesting, nudgenudge winkwink…), it’s warm and peaceful inside, especially with the white-blue morning light glowing through. Too bad we generally don’t have enough snow here to build such things. I’m glad we took advantage of the blizzard madness this year.
And hey, it’s nice to know that if we ever get stranded on a snowy mountain, we can build a shelter to hang out in before the brandy-barrel bearing dogs show up to rescue us.

the time is coming and i’m pretty excited about it. there’s frost of the ground all night now and we’ll be getting snow soon, then once there’s enough i’ll make an igloo! :)
It was a few years ago. I was doing my military service in the French mountain troops. We once had to build an igloo and sleep in it. I made one… which collapsed on my sleeping bag.
