Lisa Taylor is loving life!!
How I did it: I just bought a book on projects and searched the internet. Someone I know gave me fabric that she wasnt using anymore (so when I messed up, it didnt matter) and I just started sewing away!!! I need alot of practice, but so far I am wingin' it! I still need to learn the sewing "lingo" but i'm getting there! Read how I did it…
KatieFabulous has moved on to chocolate covered raisins.
How I did it: I took sewing in Home Ec as a kid (do they still have Home Ec?), and learned some of the basics, but was never very good at it. But when I went to the Palmer Pletsch sewing school in Portland for a week, I really learned how to sew. The school was actually for people who already knew how to sew so they could learn how to teach sewing. I was sort of an interloper in that way. It wasn't hard, however, and before you knew it, I had an … Read how I did it…
Lcee09 dogs are consuming my thoughts!
How I did it: My parents bought me a sewing machine for Christmas one year and then took me to a beginner's sewing class, comprised of two lessons, at our local Singer shop. During the first lesson, I learned how my machine works and about all it's little gadgets and how to cut a pattern for a skirt. During the next lesson, I actually sewed that pattern. It turned out well, but it was too big on me. I am almost finished with a d… Read how I did it…
How I did it: Start with simple things, follow directions and keep your fingers out of the way of the needle! :D Google simple sewing projects... start with a bear! and a skirt! thats what i did :D. Read how I did it…
How I did it: After a lot of research on the web, I found a sewing studio in downtown Toronto that offers a 3 hour BASIC, BASIC, BASIC sewing 101 class. Taught me parts of the machine, how to thread it, fix little problems and especially, not to be scared of the machine! At the end of class, I went home with my first ever sewing project, an envelope pillowcase! Two weeks after I got a sewing machine! Read how I did it…

I decided to enroll in a brief 5-week class that focuses on basic stitching and pattern-making, and I love it!! Sewing gives you so many more options with your wardrobe and it’s so rewarding to make something yourself. Right now I’m working on making a ruffled sundress out of a t-shirt. It’s so much fun :D
I had a weekend alone so, decided to pull out my machine and try to make a pair of sleep shorts. I was able to complete them in a few hours and they turned out exactly like a pair of shorts. However, I guess I need to practice measuring because I could have fit two of myself in them.
The next step is that I have to take a textiles course in order to complete my degree program so, I guess I will be able to continue to practice.

My mother is an extremely talented seamstress. She learned as a girl and refined her skills all through her life. She supported our family all through my father’s college years as a seamstress. She made may wedding gown, including the thousands of handstitched seed-pearls. I was never interested in learning to sew. I lose patience quickly with any project that cannot be finished in a couple of hours. When my mother stayed with me a couple of winters ago she helped me with very simple skills. I would love to spend the time with my mother learning the basic of sewing and being able to create things for my children and family like she has done for us.
dorktastic is going to write in her journal for the first time
I finished the beginners sewing class today. Almost done my first skirt. It’s looking pretty good!
25 years ago and lent it to my stepmother before I’d had a chance to use it. She returned it recently so I’ve ordered a Vogue pattern for a waistcoat and will keep making it until I get it right. I’ve bought a book about trousers and have one on shirts (but my friend who’s an excellent needle-woman tells me I can forget about collars for the next decade or three :D ).
Leezel is having a good day!
I figured it’s time to start getting down and dirty with these goals and I am going to start by learning how to sew. How about, I need to get the equipment to sew on, so for my birthday, I am going to ask my husband for…whadda ya know? A sewing machine! I’m so excited!
Well I have sewn a couple of things that I am very pleased with. But I don’t feel quite qualified to call myself done with this just yet… :)
Getting a sewing machine for my birthday. Or Christmas. Whichever. Very very excited. I’ve been looking up patterns for dresses and skirts and shirts. It’s gonna be awesome.

Emily asks,
“How do mini sewing machines perform? The one I'm considering buying is a 3/4 size by Kenmore, but I want to make sure it can do everything a normal sized machine can do.”
