I never got to literally smash a tv, but I can safely say that I can’t recall the last time I watched an actual tv show. Movies, once in a while, and I do indulge in the Simpsons here and there (on dvd, commercial free). I’m only human.

The standard format for tv now… (there will be a test)

    • Pre-Crap in every commercial for the show.
    • Re-Crap former episodes for the first 10 minutes of the show.
    • Original content for approximately 1/3 the alotted timeslot.
    • Pre-Crap before each commercial break.
    • Commercial advertising for approximately 1/3 of the alotted timeslot.
    • Re-Crap after each commercial break.
    • Pre-Crap upcoming episodes.

...and the roommate and I have decided that we do NOT want cable. The TV will be used for DVDs from Netflix. If I really have the need to watch something, I’m sure I can see it On Demand when I housesit for my parents, or at my coworker’s house down the street when I’m over there.

One step closer to checking this one off, finally. Been a long time coming.

The only thing stopping me from doing this right now is the fact that I don’t want to make a big mess in the yard =/ I could lay down a tarp I guess, but that kind of ruins the fun, don’t you think?

Did it years ago 2 years ago

When I moved away from home, one thing I DID NOT take with me was my TV. I knew I wasted too much time in front of it, and I wanted to experience my cross-country move to the fullest.

It has been 6 or 7 years since then, and I only miss watching that rare special now and then. I still watch it at friends’ houses when I visit if it is on, but you cannot believe how liberating it is to not live my life based on that season’s schedule. If you haven’t done it, I heartily encourage you to kill your television!

We've done this for about a year...I recommend it 2 years ago

I do miss it sometimes just to sit and veg out but honestly the crap on it just upsets me…like is this really the fall of civilization? I have a friend tivoing The Office. I go to the gym and walk on the treadmill to check out stuff sometimes. Netflixs is awesome. We read a lot more! All and all not bad really.

I only marginally miss this for special things like the tour de France 2 years ago

    otherwise, not so much.

Turns out I'd already done this in cancelling the cable. 2 years ago

I forgot that, with no roof arial, the cable box was our only source of actually receiving telly. Annoyingly enough, last night was the first night in ages that I wanted to see something – my friend’s mum was an extra on The Friday Night Project – but I’m too elated by the no-telly freedom to be all that bothered. Whoo!

The cable, she is gone. 2 years ago

Yay. One down. Today, a colleague informed me that if I wanted to listen to the White Stripes podcast I missed the previous day, I just had to press red on my digital TV remote. I was able to truthfully answer him that we don’t have digital, don’t watch telly, and that shortly wouldn’t have it at all. His puzzled face was a picture, and another colleague said, “My God! What do you do? I couldn’t live without a telly. It’s all I do of an evening. If I didn’t have a telly, I’d have to talk to my partner.”

I think that says it all.

What she said is, of course, not true. My own partner is right next to me. We are in companiable silence, and he is on his own computer.
