Not forever 14 months ago

It’s not like I’m never going to return to this, but my last attempt was unsuccessful to the point where someone told me I smelt like pot pourri. Oh dear! I wouldn’t be bothered by the lack of success apart from the fact that perfume making is a very expensive hobby!

And I’ve found a few nice natural perfumes which I like to wear… so not feeling such a strong desire to make my own.

Someday I’d like to do a proper aromatherapy or perfumery course to learn how to do it properly. For now… it’s off the list.

I made my own perfume oils for many years. It’s not difficult and not all that expensive. Really gives you a connection to whatever mood you are in or wish to create. :)

Memories 15 months ago

My sister and I would do this with a little pool, our garden and heat from the sun. Though the result would probably be called ‘floral water’. Anyway, I’m just beginning the book ‘perfume’ and I would love to make a distillery or at least mix some oils. Would be a nice present :).

Smell that? 17 months ago

I decided, I like this scent, but it’s not quite right.
So I bought all the sets I could, researched like crazy and finally sat down to figure out the basics of making my own perfume. I’m not a chemist so at first I used only the absolutes that had been premade. Then I began to pick my own scents and flowers. I can only make small amount, but it’s all mine!

it just takes time 2 years ago

earlier this summer i decided i wanted to try my hand at crafting signature perfume oils. it took a bit of trial and error but the results are definitely worthwhile. a few things i’ve learned:

1) mix with de-scented jojoba oil as a great carrier oil to get a lot of mileage out of concentrated blends.

2) experiment first by dipping a clean toothpick into one of your oils and drawing it across the back of your hand. do this with each oil you want to add to the blend without crossing the lines of scent. then swirl the lines of oil together and waft past your nose. then give the oil blend about 30 minutes to warm on your skin and mellow out. then smell again. smell throughout the day to see how the blend changes as the scents break down. if by the end of the day you’re still loving the blend, you’re ready to mix your oils.

3) when you mix your oils in the bottle (and add the aforementioned jojoba oil) give it a good shake and let it sit for at least 48 hours. this gives the blend time to mix evenly.

4) not all essential/fragrance oils will mix well. some are denser and will separate out in the bottle. you can still use these blends, but you’ll want to give the bottle a bit of a shake each time you do.

5) don’t forget a dab in the cleavage!

I did it! 2 years ago

I’m now the proud owner of my very own signature scent, courtesy of Aveda and it’s ‘Sensory Journey’ birthday treat. It contains two of their ‘Water’ element scents, which create peace, and a ‘Fire’ element which soothes and focuses energy. I can’t remember what all of the essential oils were but it definitely has Geranium in it.
