I had my tv free day 18 months ago

Half-way through the evening I was feeling pretty lonely when all at once I asked myself, “Is this how I feel when I don’t have the tv to turn to?”

It reminded me of something I heard the radio, how researcher has shown that people watching their favorite tv shows experience the same emotions associated with having friends. This makes sense now. Fundamentally I am lonely – and since at the moment their I cannot see an avenue of escape from this emotion, I settle for the second bes, tv.

I’ve been lonely off and on (mostly on) for a long time. I know firsthand that loneliness is not a subtle or easy emotion. It can be one of the hardest things to live with.

It’s good to be reminded that there are real reasons for the things I do and they need to be respected. I am not to blame for my own lonliness, not can that lonliness be swept idly aside.

Sometimes tv is neccessary to fill a void. It’s just hard to find the right balance, where I use tv now to get through to a better place in my life but don’t become so dependent I’m stuck watching tv forever. It’s ok as a temporary crutch, but I don’t want tv to actually become who I am.

I have to take this one step at a time is all and keep reflecting along the way. Things aren’t as simple as they seem.

Ugh, just ugh. Oh, let me try to find the words. All this damn tv watching must have zapped away my creatity. Shitty, tv, blah.

There is so much more to life! Why do I allow myself to be drugged by flashy color and sound, instead of living in 3D?

I know, because it’s so easy slipping into a world where everyone knows their lines, situations are black and white and endings are neat and tidy. All this in contrast to the desperate untidiness of real life, my life.

So, what to do? Give in? No, as tempting as escapism is, it’s not satisfying over the long term. Even though life is difficult and full of frustratingly unanswerable questions, the only satisfying way is to face it head on… and pull out the good things.

I just seem to have forgotten exactly what those things are. I’m not sure what to do without the tv on.

When I first did this, I was so angry, mostly because I was forced to do it. Now it’s easy and I frequently go days without watching TV. The down side to this: my TV time has now been translated into computer time, pretty much defeating the whole idea behind it.

on more days than not 2 years ago

I rarely watch TV and find that the less I watch the more that I recognize that most of what is on is not worth watching.

do it a week 2 years ago
