Balls and chains ey... 6 months ago

Well, it’s looking good at the moment – hopefully about to get a thumbs up on getting the management position at the new woolies opening up 5 mins from me… a bit of a sucky company to work for but I enjoy it and it should be good… looking forward to the nice salary. I’ve been told that even if I dont get that position, there is, apparently, now a “Career Path” for me in Woolworths… so it’s looking promising =)

The start of my life begins like this... 7 months ago

Since I was younger I always had visions of where I believed I saw myself in 10, 20, 30 or so years. I’ve always had my sights set on something, but yet, at times it just seems so tough to keep those dreams alive. When I first went into college, I was sort of talked into doing social work. I spent time in college classrooms, until one day I lost a good friend of mine in a car accident. He spent less than a day in the Intensive Care Unit at a local hospital, which ended in his death. I sat hard and really thought about my future. That’s when I stopped going to class. I left college, every single social work class. That’s when I enrolled in pre-med courses.

I just have so much going on in my life right now that just makes it so incredibly hard to keep on going. I didn’t have much of a social life growing up, but now I do. This has lead to failing grades and so much more. I hate the college I go to, which is a local community college. Teachers there are extremely impersonal. I’m sure when they were in my shoes, they had passion. But I just don’t see it at all. There is absolutely nothing motivating about going there.

I need to do good. If something ever happens to a family member or a personal friend, I want to have the ability to know what to do..how to help them. I just need to kick myself in the butt, get myself going.

Civil litigation 16 months ago

I got a job at a law firm after I thought I didn’t want to work for one, and I didn’t get the job in-house for a venture capital company that I thought I wanted. But it turns out, my new job looks fairly family-friendly (I can do some of the work from home), I’ll get to manage and try my own cases, from start to finish, and do the writing too. Plus in the midst of a recession and law firm layoffs, litigation seems to be an area where there is always work. It’s been hard to change my thinking from, what fun obscure areas of law do I like learning about to, what areas of law a) hire new untrained lawyers and b) have a steady paying client stream?

not full time yet but I'm actually getting to practice law 17 months ago

I had my first court appearances and did my first hearing with the labor board on an employment law case, so I guess this means I’m a real lawyer now. My long term goal is to be a general counsel at a company and have one client, so the next job I take hopefully will be in the corporate area.

I took the plunge 20 months ago

I have always wanted to become a flight attendant, and last August, I took the plunge and I accomplished my goal!

It was a long, tough process. I was lucky enough to be hired upon my first interview, and also to pass the rigorous 6 weeks of training. I work for an airline that is union represented, and I am so grateful for its benefits.

To anyone that is holding on to their dreams, I urge you to consider the consequences of not living them!
