Nooo!
After a month of waiting, I have come to the conclusion that the toothepick/water method is not working. I even took the pit out and cut the whole thing in half to see if anything was growing – nada!
Could have just been a dud, but I have purchased a few more avocados and will be moving on to the papertowel/plastic bag method – soaking the pit with the towel, and keeping the whole thing in a cool, dark area in the hope that it sprouts.
Carry on!

...after my delicious grilled avocado dinner, I saved the pit and decided to start on this little project. I’ll be trying a variety of different methods as I eat more of these awesome alligator pears! Currently, my lopsided pit (or ‘seed’) is sitting suspended in a tall vase of lukewarm water via toothpicks.
I’d also like to try the direct potting method, and wrapping the pit in a paper-towel and leaving it in a ziploc bag (we did something similar with beans when I was in grade school, worked like a charm!).
Progress pictures to follow.

The last two or three that ive done ahve sprouted but once they got to like 2 or 3 inches tall they died. But, I started another one about a month and a half ago and it’s actually developed leaves. hopefully it will survive and turn into a fully grown plant.

I started the avocado seed a while ago. It split open and grew a root! I can see the green bits inside, but it hasn’t sprouted a stem yet. I just noticed that it completely split apart. I think I have to plant it now or it might rot, right? I could use some advice on what to do next. Thanks!

I started the plant about a month ago, and the root is maybe two inches long (I’m bad at estimating measurements). I can’t wait to put it in soil, but I’ll miss being able to see the progress of the root. My husband teases me about being the kind of kid who always pulled up her carrots to see if they were growing.

OK OK here is the trick…ready? Do not go through with the toothpick in water bit. As soon as you use your avocado, rinse the pit to get mot of the meat off and then wrap it in a paper towel. Wet the paper towel It needs to be damp but not overly soaked. Place the wrapped seed in a ziploc bag and put it in a dark dry place for a a month or two. I usually place mine under the kitchen sink. It works every time. You can check on it after a few weeks but basically put it under there and forget about it for a few weeks. Then unwrap them carefully and put them in a pot of dirt. I learned this trick a few months ago and now have 5 plants and three in waiting. Good luck, but you wont need it.

Its a slow process, but most of all stick with it though all stages. Keep indoors in the winter (UK) in early years, otherwise the frost will kill it. avoid direct sunlight in the summer, the sun will burn the plant, although the plant will be ok outside from April till October, be patient when waiting for a root whilst in water, just when you think nothing will happen it will, keep water level up around seed (stone) good luck enjoy growing adocado – i wish i was in a warmer climate, may be thats what i like about avocado’s, apart from there tatse !!!

that avocado seed to the bin: it was in water for …too long, more than 2 months and nothing happened. I put two others in different glasses to see if something happens to them, I don´t think Ill wait as long as with the other one. I think a month should be enough to see if it grows leaves and roots. Let´s see..
