So I went to the doctor’s office on Friday and asked to be lowered from 100mg to 50mg. It has been two days now, and so far so good—I don’t feel any effects from the change, which is great. I remember that when I first went on Zoloft, 50mg did absolutely nothing for me, so the fact that I am not feeling anxious or anything does great things for my spirit :)
How to get off of zoloft!
How I did it: I did a lot of systematic desensitization while on Zoloft for the ultimate goal of getting off of it. It was on 100mg for 3 years. Then went down to 50mg to see how that was. It was fine. Then I went for the gusto and was completely taken off of the medication. For the first week or two, I feel like garbage--I was on the brink of starting back up--I went to the doctor's office to get a new prescription... I even went so far as to have the prescription filled. However, I never took the medication. I told myself that I have it at my disposal in case I needed it, but I did not want to take it simply because the current moment was a little difficult. If you can make it through the first week or two when you end the medication, you'll be just fine :)

I have been on it for about 3 years (wow, time flies). It was for an anxiety disorder that I got during my senior year of college. Although I still feel anxious at times, I just feel like I am better prepared to take it on than I was back then. I am at 100mg right now, and am thinking about dropping it down to 50mg this week (if I can get in to the doctor’s office before Monday) ... otherwise, it will be another month before I do this.
I quit last year in April and stayed off until February of this year when I started taking it again due to extreme family stress. I quit again 2 weeks ago. It was much easier this time…. maybe because I’d only been on it a few months vs 6 years the last time. It IS very difficult to wean off of if you’ve been on it for a long time. Let me know if you need advise or someone just to talk to that understands.
