Fucking fuck fuck fuck! I joined in on this goal just before I went away on holiday, and never got round to the full back up. I literally backed up some photos and probably some albums about 6 months ago.
Then, I get back from my holiday, no one had even touched my computer and the bloody SATA hard drive wouldn’t work! I kept getting this error message saying that Windows was missing.
Then I was on the phone to Dell for about 2 hours just so they could tell me I needed a new SATA. “No, really?”
Anyway, they sent me out XP on disk and I had to buy a new SATA. At some point I’ll get round to trying to recover the old one but for now I’m trying to get this one up to standard.
There’s nothing on it. Really. Nothing. Not even Notepad!
I’m going to be here for weeks fixing it. It’s annoying me so much. The screen resolutions all wrong and my history and plugins are missing.

    Worth doing 2 years ago

for the peace of mind, at least.

    Partially done 2 years ago

With the help of a friend who works in IT I was able to do part of this. Turns out that for some insanely stupid reason the hard drive is sent formatted for Windows 98 rather than Windows XP (if you read the small print and understand computerese it tells this in the 2 whole pages of instructions that come with the drive- but it doesn’t explain how to do it). She also had to download a program off their website to stop the damn disk from spinning so that it could be reformatted.

I was then able to save all of the info that I really needed, but for some reason I wasn’t able to perform a full system backup.

So I still need to call their help line.

Not exactly what I expected from a product that advertises itself as basically “plug and go.”

I recently realized 2 years ago

that I’ve had this computer for about a year and have no complete hard drive backup for it. Sure, some of my pics are on various CDs, chips, flash drives, etc. but I would not be a happy camper if the hard drive failed and my info was lost!

Bought a “My Book” 250 GB external hard drive this week for $170 with a $10 instant rebate and a $60 mail-in rebate. This system is supposedly easy to use but even after help from a friend who works in IT I can’t get it to backup. Some problem with the computer recognizing this as a backup device.

And of course, there’s nobody at technical support today…

The online support doesn’t seem to address the version that I have.

I guess that I’ll try calling again tomorrow.

    Well, that was fun.

I’ve got my own subversion repository now! svn://xmouse.ithium.net/svn/xmouse: I’ll probably back up using that.

major clean up 2 years ago

I backed up everything that I wanted to keep on to DVD, then I found all of the install disks and files for the programs that I wanted and I did a clean format and install. My powerbook is now running like a top and it’s free of excess clutter, next I have to do that to my apartment :).

Well, the important stuff 2 years ago

I’m using Apple’s Backup.app to perform my backups. Daily of the important stuff up to my iDisk, Daily for everything but the big stuff to my local machine and Weekly to my Soekris box at home.

Did this before I moved house but need to do it again soon. Wish there was an easy way to do it.

I bought an external drive and it came with automatic backup software. Now I don’t have to worry about losing my data.
