start a Socrates Cafe club

I started a process which ended in someone else taking the idea and making it come to life. They had the resources. Does that mean this happened?

Okay, I haven’t STARTED one per se ;p just attended one regularly at Sacramento City College. It’s amazing everytime, no matter the number, which usually is pretty low. I definitely agree that “Philosophy” tends to intimidate. I’ve just moved back to San Jose a couple of weeks ago, so I’m looking for like minded people around here that aren’t afraid of questions. So far, so good. I think by Fall semester, I might be able to organize one around here.

A friend and I did this in CT a couple of years ago. We had a hard time finding people who were interested, getting people to come back, and keeping people on topic when we were discussing. One of our biggest obstacles was the fact that “philosophy” is so intimidating to people based on prevailing assumptions. Perhaps we’ll try again in the future after we’ve had some time to come up with what did and did not work. I really do think it’s a worthwhile endeavor, and sometimes it just takes a while to get something started.

My old high school has been setting up a stronger and stronger Philosophy program as the years go by. It’s time to bring the Socrates Cafe into the community. This is truly the first step to free-thinking and intelligence on a global level. I am very hopeful. Read the book “Socrates Cafe”. That’s important too.

The Socrates Cafe is a philosophy discussion session based on the book ‘The Socrates Cafe’. The first one went real well. The second one seemed to stumble more. I think I’m going to put it on hiatus for a little while. The fall is going to be so busy. I’ll be either teaching or taking classes every night of the week.

In the New Year, I might start this back up!
