check out fearofflying.com. it helped me a lot without even buying the dvds they sell. the first step is to replace the negative images you have in your head about flying. start watching every plane that you see in the sky, start thinking about all the things around you that came by plane, start letting it really sink in every time someone you know flies safely. think about this: there are about 4000 planes over the US alone at any given time, all day long, every day. the average pilot flies day in and day out for 30 years or so without any incidents. flying is so routine and so normal and so safe – our experience of it is not reality. we only hear about planes when something bad happens; the media skips the millions of safe flights in between. it feels out of control because it’s not familiar and routine for us. being in a car seems so normal that we feel safe even tho it’s much scarier than flying when you really think about it. planes are maintained carefully, inspected daily, when in the air they are separated from each other by miles with nothing around to hit. we think there is nothing under us but air is not always nothing. think of the forces air can exert. it is strong enough to move houses, lift roofs off buildings. stick your hand out the side of a car as you accelerate to 40, 50, 60 mph – you will feel the air push your hand up. planes go much faster and are more aerodynamic – this is how the air lifts them off the ground. oh and turbulence? not scary at all. it feels scary but it is not much different than a boat moving with the waves on water. picture the plane suspended in jello – if you move the jello, it would shake but the plane wouldn’t just fall out of the jello. turbulence just does NOT knock planes out of the sky.
i didn’t fly for about 14 years, now i go on vacations all the time without a second thought about having to fly. it can be done!!
